Did you know that the first version of this list is the website's most popular article in it's entire history? Because it is! Consistently read to this very day (thank you so much, guys. It actually does mean a lot to me), and it even got stolen by another website once because some people are arseholes who can do nothing but leech off of others. So with a list as popular as that, I felt it was only fitting to cheer up your summer by adding 20 more!
Just to be clear, this is 20 different anime and manga than the others in the previous list. So if a series is missing here, please check out the previous list. And remember, as always, it's one per series. Also, this is a very naughty list so please ask for permission before clicking it. Thank you and enjoy!
20. Don't Do-S to Me (One-Punch Man)
Sometimes, fanservice requires a pratfall or whatever to get the view the readers want to see. Other times, the character literally shows up already dressed for the occasion, as is the case with One-Punch Man's Do-S, a villain who is clearly ready for any situation from battles to BDSM to wedding parties.
First arriving during season 2's Monster Raid arc, Do-S was one of several villainous monsters who showed up to beat up heroes and destroy a city. She's eventually forced to retreat by the threats of Fubuki and Tatsumaki, aka two of the best characters of the series right behind Genos. And she was certainly effective as both a threat and a chewer of scenery, so brownie points there! She's also the only evil character on this list.
19. Bath of Eden (Eden's Zero)
Let's get the obvious one out of the way now, which is probably why it's so low actually. If you ever do your own fanservice list and not have a Hiro Mashima property in there somewhere, then consider me shocked and appalled. And it was tempting to go with the massage scene, but that only lasts around one page. Besides, anime love their baths and we might as well get as many as we can today.
Eden's Zero's bath has been regularly visited throughout the series, since it is on the ship and the perfect opportunity to have the fanservice easily slot in. I've gone with when Rebecca and Homura were having a conversation together and nearly had a duel, since that one has a nice interaction and Best Girl Homura standing up.
18. A Natural Feeling (Agravity Boys)
Oh, I never said this was just women, did I? The last list included men and so will this one! That's how good I am to you! Anyway, Agravity Boys is a brand new manga that started at the very end of 2019, and is all about four astronaut lads who have landed on an alien planet after Earth was destroyed. It's like if Red Dwarf was sprinkled with Gintama and the misunderstandings of Frasier. I like it, it's cute.
Speaking of cute, that's how this fanservice-able chapter comes about. You see, one of the members, Chris, is as feminine as they come and the other guys are absolute idiots who aren't sure how to handle it sometimes. So when a natural spring is found, they find themselves trying to dissuade Chris from taking his shirt off and going in by showing off their own bodies instead. It barely makes any sense, but the censorship at the end makes it worth it.
17. Playing with Portals (Blood Lad)
I miss Blood Lad, the Yin to Soul Eater's Yang. While Soul Eater wins thanks to it's characters, I always felt Blood Lad had the stronger story. As well as that, the characters were still very enjoyable, even if they couldn't match Soul Eater (which would win against a lot of anime, let's be fair). And it's one of those characters, Bell Hydra, that dominates this entry.
Basically, because of story reasons, main protagonist Staz is put to the test by Bell and the two compete. Bell's unique and awesome portal powers because portals will always be awesome helps her gain the advantage, until a mistake causes her entire bottom half to be naked and the ridiculous battle shifts in Staz's favour. It's immensely silly, but their personalities do shine through.
16. Tamaki's Lucky Lewd Syndrome
And so we come to the divisive one. Fire Force got a lot of crap last year for it's fanservice, or more specifically the character Tamaki. Which did seem a bit odd to me because out of all the anime to be angry over fanservice, it was Fire Force? I can think of so many other shows and films out there with way worse fanservice... like Rise of Skywalker.
Anyway, Tamaki is a fire-user like several other characters, but her secondary ability is known as "Lucky Lewd Syndrome", where she inexplicably becomes fanservice with little reason. One key example being when she gets her clothes torn up and has flames appear around her, which is actually a very cool image... but it comes up during a big dramatic scene, so okay, maybe I can see why some people got annoyed.
15. Prison School Uniform
Ok, cards on the table and all that. I don't like Prison School. I find the artwork creepy, the characters unlikeable, the fanservice overkill. Something about it has always rubbed me up the wrong way, and I like to think fans of this series would be able to understand why, even though they disagree with me. So this entry is on this list purely for you guys, since it's definitely not for me.
There's a lot of ridiculously-dressed characters out there in the world of anime, but Meiko Shiraki is a standout amongst them. Serving as the vice-president of the Underground Student Council, Meiko is merciless on the protagonists and so this scene really goes without saying. Prison School fans, this series is not for everyone but I'm happy you enjoy it at least.
14. Timeskip Nami
I've gone on enough about One Piece's designs after the timeskip, and honestly that still stands to this day. I don't care for the hourglass waists of so many of the women, nor do I like the horrific size of Franky or even the overly-detailed wackiness of Brook. (In fairness, that last one is mostly because I adored the design before).
Nami has always been a character that knew she was hot and didn't care what you think, which is actually a trait of hers I really admire. I suppose it shouldn't have been a surprise that her new design was this different, and yet we still rose our eyebrows in shock when we first saw her in that pub to meet Luffy and the crew. I mean, high heels on a pirate ship? Are you mad?!
13. Honey, I Shrunk You (Nanatsu no Taizai)
I have no idea how a character like Merlin can exist in a series, and yet have nothing to do with the fanservice scene I've chosen for this list. Seriously, check out the Merlin of this anime and then be confused that I'd choose this instead! Then again, this fanservice also brings up some plot shenanigans too so I think it's deserving.
While wanting to compete in a fighting tournament, Meliodas, Ban and King are shocked to find that their giantess ally Diane has been shrunk down to human size and is now competing! And to make matters even stranger, their human friend Elizabeth is now having to hide out in her bosom until clothes can be made or her size returns. And honestly, where else was she going to hide? A pocket? Don't be daft!
12. The Silent Chapter (Negima)
Yes, I know. Nobody but me has read Negima and the anime is lacklustre at best, but I think it's a very funny series with crazy action and a diverse cast of misfits so I'm always doing my best to bring it up wherever I can. If you ever try reading it, you'll probably give up at first like I did because of the egregious fanservice kicking off before the plot does, but this later chapter has both plot and fanservice so I'm okay with it.
What makes this fanservice stand out is that there is no dialogue to it. Protagonist Negi loses a ring in the baths, a friend of his tries to help, chaos and mischief ensues. There's almost no clothing, no sign language, and yet everyone is able to display who they are and act exactly like we know they would... if they were all mute for a day.
11. Another Day, Another Bath (My Hero Academia)
Earlier, I was a bit critical of people judging Fire Force for having fanservice. I am a hypocrite, and I do actually apologise, because I almost always dislike the fanservice of My Hero Academia. Yes, there are very few instances of it but they almost always involve that creepy grape bastard trying to do something and he's just the worst. The worst.
However, I do like this scene and I shall gently explain why. First of all, Mineta gets punished harshly when he's trying to peek over the wall, because he's a failure at life and deserves it. Secondly, it gives Izuku another opportunity to help out Kota when he falls off the wall himself after hurting Mineta, which helps solidify their relationship. And thirdly, the invisible girl at the top there. That's funny.
10. Hideyoshi! (Baka to Test)
Hideyoshi Kinoshita is the peak of all anime. Much like Captain America's ass is the peak of all of America's other asses, Hideyoshi is the one above all others. So when he gets involved in fanservice, you thank him for that privilege. It's as simple as that. And while his scenes might not be the best of the best, as shown by the 9 above him, I think you should still be using my new hashtag #thankyouhideyoshi.
*sigh* But which moment to use? The swimsuit running gag, which includes when his back is exposed in a confusing manner? The ripped dress? The flag girl joke? The Magical Girl sequence? No, I think I'll go with when he got his own bathroom assigned to him because of comedy, and he decided to make a show of it instead of being like everyone else. Sometimes, you got to go for style points.
9. Sparkle Censorship! (Fruits Basket)
Probably the jewel of the romantic crown when it comes to anime, Fruits Basket's reboot took me by surprise in quite a few ways. First, the dub is consistently wonderful and has a hilarious Christopher Sabat voice declaring he's a bottom. Secondly, endearing characters that don't degrade into obsessed cliches (hello, Nisekoi) and thirdly, the only fanservice seems to be of the men!
Whenever a member of the Zodiacs are embarrassed, they turn into their animal. It's a cute idea, and it does serve the plot in many ways later on. More importantly, it provides shenanigans and a perfect opportunity for the mostly-male group of characters to end up in the nude when they pop back to their human forms, first shown in the first episode, which is the example I'm using here. Now imagine how high this would be on the list if that colourful dust wasn't there!
8. A Dark(ness) Day (Konosuba)
Sometimes, I'm just spoiled for choice. Konosuba, one of the few Isekai I actually enjoy, is a hilarious mess of nonsense and violence and screaming that somehow manages to be endearing despite all this. And I don't think it's purely because of the fanservice. I just think that's a big help for a lot of people who struggle to get along with Aqua (although I personally love her).
After some careful planning and soul-searching, I rummaged through the choices until I decided that the "best" fanservice for this type of anime should be the one that stands out as the most unique. Something you would not see in any other anime. So of course I picked the time Darkness got to be a masochist to a swarm of cabbages!
7. Viktor in Water (Yuri on Ice)
I adore this series so much! Yuri on Ice, the best sports anime ever, heavily centered on figure skating and gay romance, with some hilarity inbetween. And despite my favourite character Yuri Plisetsky doing some amazing stretches, I have to give the Fanservice Award to that time Viktor did this.
Who amongst us can deny wishing our hero would come to us, tell us why they choose us to be their protege, then literally help us stretch in the middle of the bathhouse after wanting their photo taken? WHO I ask?! Not you, that's for damn sure! So many baths to choose from, but this might be the best one out there...
6. Bunny! (Beastars)
Beastars is one of my favourite anime to come out in the past five years, with a wonderful sense of humour and enjoyable cast of characters. I loved the anime so much that I read the manga almost immediately afterwards, the dub is fantastic, the story is engaging, but sadly, people just remember it best as "the anime for furries". As someone who has talked to furries, I think they get a bad rap. Although scenes like this doesn't exactly disprove that belief. Then again, Space Jam got away with it...
Legosi, the big grey wolf protagonist, has fallen in love with the small white rabbit Haru and finds himself trying to ask her out or spend time with her. Due to a misunderstanding and Haru's bunny nature, this results in her revealing what she wears underneath the uniform and offering herself to the flustered boy. He panics, she's confused, and a few members of the audience find themselves reflecting on who they are. Everyone wins.
5. Shining Star (Keijo!!!!!!!!)
Keijo is a dumb series, but I can't hate it because it knows how dumb it is and has fun with it. If you take it seriously for even a second, you only have yourself to blame and no I will not defend it! It's a sports anime about women using the bumps on their bodies to knock each other off platforms and into the water. Nothing more, nothing less.
There's a million examples to go for here, including the Hip of Babylon reference which is as childish as it is hilarious, but I've gone for when the white-haired girl Sayaka Miyata unleashes her ultimate speed-up attack known as K-Acceleration, through the power of an extremely uncomfortable-seeming wedgie. Why this one? Well, it has a Jojo reference in the anime. And honestly, that's as good a reason to place it above the others as any.
4. Dance, Magic, Dance (Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt)
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is not a series I could ever sell. It's batshit insane, the designs are childish, the dialogue is vulgar and full of swears in both sub and dub, the story is ridiculous and the characters range from psychopathic to psychopathic but with different hair. And yet, somehow it's also a lot of fun to watch... Anyway, obviously it should be mentioned here.
Since Panty and Stocking is technically a magical girl series, (although apparently Kill la Kill is one as well so I have no idea how the rules of this genre work anymore), there has to be an overly-glittery transformation. And when these two do it, the animation has a massive change in style, stripper poles appear, the clothing that will become their weapons are removed, and the villain waits to let them do all this because why even be an anime antagonist if you don't allow yourself to be defeated eventually by an overly-complicated ritual.
3. Mascot Mischief (Gleipnir)
Our most recent entry on this list, as the anime Gleipnir only aired earlier last season, is special for a three reasons. The first of which is that it's such a bizarre way to create fanservice that it's almost impressive, since most fanservice scenes like to just bring out the boobs or butts and be done with it. The second reason is it's hilariously silly. And the third... well... It's pretty obvious what the subtext is here.
In the anime of Gleipnir, the main character Shuichi has the strange power to literally transform into a mascot-looking dog, complete with a zipper on the back that can open up to his hollowed-out insides. And when assertive girl Claire finds out about all this, she gets the idea to team up with him and go... inside... him. Literally. And while that might not sound very fanservice-y to you in text, watching it is a whole different story.
2. Boobs of Pokemon, (And The Fabulous Racks of One Jessie and James) (Pokemon)
With the exception of the next entry, no other scene of fanservice is as infamous and well-known throughout the community as the time Pokemon went so far that it's entire episode was skipped by 4Kids until the year 2000, when it was edited so kids didn't see the big'ins and then only aired one more time before being removed from rotation forever. At least this makes more sense than the riceballs, but completionists out there must be in tears.
It's a very simple premise of course. In the episode "Beauty and the Beach", the female characters of Pokemon have entered a beauty contest to win a prize, and James crossdresses as well so Team Rocket has twice the chance to win. You all recognise this picture, this controversy, this censorship. It's legendary, and easily takes the number 2 spot.
1. Interspecies Reviewer's Entire Existence (Interspecies Reviewer)
At the end of the day, I could go on about different events or designs, but the top spot belongs to something special. A fanservice so strong that it literally caused the dubbing company to stop working on it, get pulled off the air by Tokyo MX, and was memed so hard that it became the most recommended series on one of the biggest anime websites around. All of this is true, and it's ridiculous.
I was tempted to just say the scene involving a hyena girl, but that didn't go far enough. So I was going to say the entire episode she shows up, but that's ignoring everything else that happened in this series. In the end, the answer was clear. All of it belongs here, as this anime was somehow able to push the manga to levels so close to hentai that it became difficult for many to tell the difference, and is probably going to end up on way too many "Best of 2020" lists in December.
And so farewell, my friends. This list may be over, but the fanservice will always live on in our hearts.
