Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Chapters 72 and 73 Review

 Written by Shiggins

Party up in here!

Well guys, I can safely say that having two chapters to write about instead of one has massively improved the size of this review. I think you'll be pleased because I certainly am. It's about time Fairy Tail got a proper look from me again. Anyway, here's my review and I'm now going back to my Danganronpa and One Piece lists that I'm working on...

For those wondering what the situation regarding Eden's Zero is, take a look at my article here explaining everything: CLICK HERE

Well artists, do your thing! With gratitude from us all!

Our first chapter begins with Touko and Faris (unfortunate start) as they decide to head to the Whiteout Temple where the priestesses live, hoping they can get help from the woman in charge. Instead of continuing that path, we head to Mimi who is battling against Lucy and her spirits with ease. There's an interesting dynamic between Mimi and Capricorn before he is knocked down too, where they both express respect for each others' martial art skills and Mimi points out that if Lucy was stronger, her spirits would probably be stronger too, as is the case with Youko.

I'm now suddenly aware and annoyed at how little of Capricorn we've had recently.
Lucy is defeated and crying over her weakness, as we move to Natsu and Gray fighting against Hakune. Unfortunately for her, this fight is nowhere near as interesting and ends almost abruptly with the duo being frozen by her unique abilities. Our chapter ends with Selene disappointed they all lost so easily, and asks Youko, Hakune and Mimi to bring their victories to her.

Our second chapter starts at Black Moon Mountain, in the Japanese-inspired home of Selene who is having a bath. We got a whole panel of a butt, before we're shown she has Natsu and Gray held captive before her. Selene explains she needs to have a bath three times a day, and her argument against them accusing her of being a pervert is she's a dragon. Dragons don't wear clothes. Can't beat that logic.

She might be the smartest villain yet!
Selene tells them that the name of this place and says it gives a great sight of the constant moon on Elentir. She also explains her motivation is entertainment, wanting to get a good show from the people and enjoy the chaos and carnage caused by Elentir's upcoming destruction from the amount of magic. This is when Selene begins a feast, with Mimi, Hakune and Youko all participating in a big drunken party.

After the party, Selene decides to get the real fun started and uses that teleportation magic again (the one where the moon gets brighter) to send Natsu and Gray to underground caverns separate from each other. Selene's power of narration tells them they are inside Onigatsuki, a lair for river and mountain yokai, and they have to fight their way out. Natsu gets a few kills in, but is then given a shock when Lucy appears, having been transformed into a Nure-Onna. Basically, she a snek now!

Opinion: Manga of culture.

Before we get into the actual story of the chapters, let's start by taking a second to appreciate that we're getting a clearly large amount of influence and references to actual Japanese culture. There's far too many to list here, but every yokai and location and costume we've seen recently thanks to Selene is worth checking out yourself when you got some free time.

Messy Bessy.
So has anyone else noticed something about Elentir yet? Or rather, something missing? That's right, there's no pizza! I mean, men! Yes. I'm talking about the fact we haven't seen or even heard of a single male character or entity since arriving here. The Whiteout Temple is full of priestesses, Selene's party only had women in it, and we've not ran across any villages or whatnot yet. Have we arrived in the Fairy Tail version of... *Googles the name*... Themyscira? Are all men servants, kept out of sight? Or is it just pure coincidence?

Unsurprisingly, Mimi's fight was the best of the three and brought back fond memories of Kain Hikaru (which I knew it would and I'm fairly certain I called in an earlier review!), and I liked her interaction with Lucy about strength and how that affects the spirits she commands. With the exception of finding her Aquarius key, I think it's safe to say that Lucy has been fairly arc-less since we began this new journey, so desperately desiring a new upgrade could be useful. Or it could be our Ultimate Gohan, time will tell. Let's just say I can't see her stealing the defeat of Selene or Ignia from Natsu, as awesome as that might be.

So... she's another Silver?

When I think back on this newest chapter, I remember Selene's party and... honestly, I didn't like it. It feels like it was very confused about the tone it was trying to set. We see people dancing, laughing and making silly faces but with Natsu and Gray captive, implying this is meant to be disturbing or at the very least creepy. However, the captives themselves are making comical faces as well and acting like this is an annoyance, rather than a troubling situation, and it completely throws me. And this is a shame because it could have been a really good way to show how Selene's depravity and cruelty is, as something casual and without urgency. So basically, Natsu and Gray buggered it up!

On a final note, Selene revealed she takes three baths a day. That might be a way to show how obsessed she is with her appearance and scent, or just an excuse for fanservice, but I don't know about that. Three baths a day would be boring as hell! Sitting there in a tub of your own water for that long... her skin would get all pruney. So I can't help but wonder... is this a hint to Selene's weakness? Is she weak to being dried up perhaps?

Manga Rating:

72: 4/5

73: 2.5/5

Best Part: Lucy vs Mimi.

Worst Part: A confused party.

I love this far too much. Tell me more, tell me more!
