Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Chapters 82, 83, 84, 85 & 86 Review

 Written by Shiggins

Catch-up extravaganza!

Yes, I've kept you waiting long enough, so here we go! Four full chapters, reviewed by me. And to keep you from reading a bunch of pointless paragraphs, I've decided to stick with just writing the "Opinion" section for this review, and will hopefully return to normal next time. To all those patient enough to let me take a break, thank you! I really needed it. I know this year has been rough for my articles but I've got some fun ones planned, so I hope you keep reading.

It was a really bad idea for this series to make a character that would make a better protagonist right now than the actual main characters. Suzaku is too good.

So we've got the fight between Selene and Suzaku still going on. Lots of fun movement and choreography, but it was hard not to be frustrated because we kept jumping back and forth between them and the main characters. However, the twist reveal that Suzaku's dragon-victim was actually one of Selene's sons makes this interaction even more interesting than previously thought. Are there more sons out there that we'll meet soon? Or are they already dead? Is she going to find the Dragon Balls to bring them all back? And most importantly, is it a bad sign that the most interesting fight of this review is one that doesn't involve a single main character, but rather someone who has had so little screentime in comparison to the others?

Which brings us to Gray's fight against Hakune. The fantasy provided by Hakune of the happy life Gray would love to have is a nice reminder of how far he's come over the years, as well as some cute cameos by Ultear and Silver, but all it really did was repeat what we already knew; He wants to have a child with Juvia soon. The way Gray defeated Hakune was so simple as well, all it did was make me wonder why he waited so long to do it. Was it to raise the tension and let them get captured for a while? It seems so.

At least the Princess Mimi fight was a lot more enjoyable, since it actually felt like a large amount of effort was needed to succeed. It also helps that I'm obsessed with every panel Princess Mimi exists in, as many of you are no doubt aware by now, and she literally gets defeated while remaining standing strong. Yes, that's a cliché we've seen a bunch of times now (Whitebeard, Rock Lee, Makarov etc) but it's still so cool. It's a cliche for a reason, and it totally belongs to Princess Mimi. I also got flashbacks to when Lucy fought off Tartarus opponents by herself as well, and this served as a nice reminder of how engaging she can be as a character when the story isn't making her need to be rescued.

Something much less engaging to me however are those damn "Hands" that make their reappearance. I commented on them when they first showed up, but I really do hate these things. They look ridiculous, and the way they create monsters by their "fingernail dirt" is both stupid and just plain gross. A multitude of hands can be intimidating when drawn in a certain way, but this isn't it. On a more optimistic side however, Wendy is noticing a similarity between the Hands and the Face bombs from the Tartarus arc. Could these things be about to cause a larger problem than we realised? I'm personally curious to see if we're about to have this arc's final boss be a giant multi-armed yokai of death. That might be interesting if done right.

The way the final chapter ends, with a wounded Selene trying to escape while Natsu vows to track her down does feel a bit awkward. When the hero is saying "I'm going to kill you", you want them to say it to an evil foe that needs to be defeated. This is a bloodied and pained woman who just told us her son was eaten by the man who cut her down. I agree she has to be stopped but the execution (ha, puns) of this is at a bad time. So yeah... awkward is the word we're going to use here.

Oh and there are men now! Elentir has male monks at the unexplored White House religion. So that's my theory about this world screwed over, which seems unfair. Where were they this whole time?! And now we'll probably never see gender-swapped Gajeel. I am heartbroken.

Thanks again for reading everyone! I hope to bring out more articles and reviews over the rest of the year, and I'm so glad for your patience and understanding. Unless you don't understand. Then I don't have any good answers for you, guys. Sorry!

  1. Glad to have you back! Reading a Fairy Tail Chapter does feel complete after going through your reviews.

Now on about the chapters, Gray and Juvia better get together this time. We know they want to be together, even the unclear dialogue between the two confirms it. Get your girl and move on. Gajeel and Levi are having a baby, so it's about time another obvious couple got together. I hope next time we don't get this. He is getting kinda repetitive, and after the not so exciting fight with Hakune, his next better be epic.

Lucy fight was really awesome. Mimi was a really engaging opponent, and the fact that the woman refuses to get down even when defeated, just gives more mad respect to her. She will be missed!

Those hands so far only look like they're there to keep some of the characters away from confrontation with Selene. Hopefully the fact that they're reminding Wendy from face will make it more interesting.

Also Suzaku vs. Selene is the highlight. So much so that I don't even care what the rest is doing. But I wonder if Natsu will end up facing Suzaku next. After hearing that he killed Selene's son, not to mention he probably wants revenge, he might ending up taking him. What I don't want to happen, since that would mean he'd be getting both Suzaku and Selene.

In a last note, we're probably hitting the end of this arc so it's a shame Elentir got so underexplored. It's weirdness made it appealing, so it'd be fun to know more about it.

And now there are men?! I don't want to go there anymore.

Great review as always, and about the breaks, it's understandable. The world is messed up and having time for one's hobbies/interests is now a huge privilege. Plus you've been doing those for almost 10 years. Mad respect for you.

I'm really looking forward for your upcoming articles. Keep up the great work!

    1. Thanks very much for reading! Always good to hear from someone else with their constructive thoughts on chapters. You make a good point about Elentir, I'll be sure to remember that actually.
