Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Chapter 67 and Eden's Zero 114 & 115 Review

 Written by Shiggins

Theme: Briefly name-dropping future villains.

Both Fairy Tail and Eden's Zero decided to give us some teases this time, but with vast differences. Fairy Tail decided to tell us a whole lot of stuff, involving the White Wizard and the new world, while Eden's Zero only had to drop one name to make me interested in what it was going for. There's a massive difference in the skill of writing between these two manga this week, so get ready for quite a jarring review if you read both manga.

Noooo! Come baaaack! I'm not ready for this!

Fairy Tail

The group sit in shock at hearing about Selene, since she is one of their targets and just happens to be namedropped here in Edolas. Mystogan says he knows very little about her outside she can travel through dimensions, and that Elentir is the opposite of Edolas, with even more magic than Earthland. As Natsu imagines what I was basically expecting to get, a ring of water, Aqua Aera, opens up to bring in Touka the exceed.

I mean... is he wrong? Is that not how it will work? I want exactly this!
Now for lots more talking so let's just rush through this! Touka tells them she is from Elentir, there are other exceeds there, she was possessed by WW in Elentir before her body was used to go to Earthland, the magic was unstable when they arrived on Earthland (which is we saw a tail and personality breaks throughout), WW was unstable when she used Aqua Aera which is why she and everyone else went to Edolas instead, and her goal to rescue Elentir is confusing because it was very peaceful when Touka last saw it.

I'd simp for this.
Touka tells them she cannot use magic in Edolas either, which means they're stuck here. E-Erza realises the X-Balls from the Edolas arc could be used to help them here, and in the span of one page, Mystogan sends a bunch of people to locate WW, she's found by E-Fairy Tail, and they say their goodbyes before heading off. Once they arrive, WW reveals her name is actually Faris and is not actually the real White Wizard but was only pretending to be, and she did all this to save Elentir from Selene.

Opinion: Blah blah blah.

What a boring chapter this one was. Exposition after exposition, reveal after reveal, but very little of it was actually interesting. Mystogan just happened to have so much information he could spill out, then Touka arrived just in time to barf out even more, and we finished up our chapter with Faris dumping out a few more facts too. It almost felt like people were just waiting in line to give their own information, and none of it felt organic. It's almost hilarious how the capture of Faris was essentially one single page, when we spent the entire rest of the chapter reading text dumps.

As much as I love Anna Faris... Can we please bring the old WW/Touka back? I don't like this.
And what a retcon some of this information is too. Elentir is a world that never existed before, but now it does and it is massively important to the plot and every new character's actions. And Mystogan found out about it in the past 8 years because... reasons. Most insultingly of all however, Faris is now this scared and sad girl who was just playing the role of the White Wizard? Maybe I'm wrong but were there not many many moments of her being sadistic, enjoying herself as she tortured, laughing maniacally when she had white'd everyone, and basically being a villain who loves her role despite nobody around to watch her play the role? Either she was trying to trick the audience reading the manga, or this is a bullshit tactic used to make Faris seem good and kind so she can join the heroes, instead of getting to have fun. Well, I'm not buying it. That's dumb. Is Kiria going to reveal herself to be a spy next who was helping Fairy Tail all along? I'm genuinely so annoyed by this that I'm not even going to bother speculating who this new White Wizard could be until the next review.

And have we left the castle already?! I was looking forward to seeing Sugarboy, Hughes, Coco, Byro, E-Erza and Mystogan be a regular part of this, but they all seem to have come and gone with only Mystogan providing any story purpose and E-Erza providing some genuine fun. I assume we're about to head into Elentir next, which might mean we're about to say goodbye to E-Fairy Tail too, but that's going to suck if so because Nasha and Griege! I know it will be forced, but can we make it Nasha and Griege accidently come along to Eternir too? I don't mind something forced if it's at least fun, and that would be fun I'm sure.

His staff is so weird. It's like a fan but not a fan... shaped like a fin? It's weird.
You want to know what my favourite part of this chapter was? The X-Balls, because that's something from the past being used effectively to further the story in a logical way, and doesn't come across as a  simple nostalgic callback. I like when Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest does that. Other than that, nothing here really kept me awake. Almost every fact I was told was either obvious, already known to me, or lies!

Manga Rating: 1.5/5

Best Part: X-Balls!

Worst Part: Faris is just a victim too, guys!

Eden's Zero

Shiki is fighting the giant robot, who I'll name Biscuit, and flips him over. This is when we see an army of robots, which means that everyone else gets to join in the fight too. It's basically an excuse to get everyone showing off their skills, like Couchpo using her mouth! Because she's fat! Her personality is fat! What a well-rounded character, pun not intended!

Now I want to rewatch Bleach again. How cool was that first opening? Answer is very.
Back at the Eden's Zero, Sister is finished giving Kleene's boobs an examination, but Kleene opens up that she doesn't want to leave the ship. We get a brief flashback of Kris saying to Sister that Kleene has a disorder that will cause her body to have a breakdown if she shows emotion without her devices to keep them at bay, and the two have a brief glare-off when Kris panics over Sister finding out the event that caused this problem.

Now I need to wonder if they'd be a good couple together...
An alarm goes off in the ship, revealing that drones are charging towards them. Laguna, Kris, Kleene and Moscoy all decide to fight to protect the ship, which means we're getting some dogfight action! Before we can get to that however, we cut back to the other group who have ran into a cute little robot that sort of resembles a Fall Guys... fall guy?

The Fall Guy says that there are other robots like them who kept their will to live peacefully and begs for help, but they are getting wiped out by Nero's forces. Shiki promises to help, and the Fall Guy is emotionally grateful... before it's literally murdered before our eyes by Nero enforcer Mora, which of course causes mockery and Shiki to charge in a rage, but is subdued by Mora's glue attack, as are the others.

Mora stands in a winning position, before he notices that Pino managed to be forgotten by his glue. Following his mission, Mora goes to attack Pino but is distracted by the Happy-Guns until Shiki literally lifts the tree he's attached to and smacks Mora with it. Of course, Mora isn't that easy to take down and is able to fight back. The fight goes on as Mora laughs at the idea of androids having hearts or souls, and Mora actually starts to get an advantage.

Somewhere right now, a certain character voiced by Haley Joel Osment has woken up in a sweat.
This is when he's interrupted by Britney and Orc, his two allies we saw last time. They scan Shiki and identify him as a Demon King, which Orc says is the same as someone else called Shura. We finally cut back to the dogfight, which is nice and action-packed like I hoped, with even Moscoy helping out. God, Moscoy is a weird experience to witness. However, Hermit has come to a horrifying realisation that the same virus that turned the bots mad could also infect the Shining Stars!

Opinion: Evil Witch?!

Hermit, you have now given me the opportunity to have an evil Witch, Sister or you, so you cannot take that away from me. The cliche of characters having to fight their own friends due to an evil virus/mist/infection/brainwashing is always a fun one, so I'm looking forward to seeing Sister go full sadist on the characters, as everyone else uses their own weapons and friends against them. For all we know, this could result in the entire Eden's Zero being a threat. If you're having trouble picturing it, imagine that film Monster House in a sci-fi setting, or 2001: A Space Odyssey with more fanservice... Holy shit, why hasn't someone made one of them yet?!

A name that I'm sure caught everyone's eye this chapter was Shura, and yeah I'm the same. Who is Shura, and why is he considered a Demon King like Shiki? Does Nero have an anti-Shiki in his employ? Or is there a Shura that is running around causing his own problems for Shura? Is he after the title and willing to fight Shiki for it? Basically, there's a lot of roads to take with this hint and if it doesn't meet my unrealistic expectations, then that's Eden's Zero fault and not mine! Right?

Moscoy scares the shit out of me.
Once again, the brutality of Eden's Zero is on display as we see Mora shoot down a Fall Guy just as it seemed they were going to be a new companion for the arc, although this did make me realise that this entire arc has basically been nothing but brutality. Ever since they landed, we've seen humans treated like dogs, been in fights with robots like Biscuit, and been in a fight with Mora. This arc is probably just a small piece of everything going on, but it really does feel like we skipped a few steps to get here. No real set-up for the planet itself to give us a feel of what it was like before everything, no room to check out the camp of survivors that Mora and co have attacked. Again, I know this is just part of the puzzle and probably not too important overall, but I thought it was worth mentioning that this arc is seeming quite unambitious on it's own.

Manga Rating: 3.5/5

Best Part: Fun fighting in both land and air.

Worst Part: Everything outside the fighting feels shallow.

Those are clearly silicone.
