Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Chapters 19 to 22 Review - The Ignia Fanclub Edition

Written by Shiggins

Ignia is Ig-bae-a.

So I had to sacrifice a review or two because of Eden's Zero, but we got here in the end. We're past all the Diabolos stuff, and now our heroes are... still fighting Mercuphobia. Huh. Well, that's a shame, but wait! What's this? A new challenger approaches! And he might be freaking amazing!

Get used to this, until I inevitably get disappointed.

Our first chapter begins with Mercuphobia causing more destruction on a massive scale, not quite at Acnologia's level but close enough honestly. Everyone attempts to destroy Mercuphobia, but he withstands every attack, including Natsu's strongest finisher. Just as all hope seems lost, and Natsu is about to be swallowed up by a whirlpool, a huge dragon hand suddenly grabs him and declares that Natsu belongs to him.

What song do you hear when you look at this thing? Something AC/DC-ish perhaps?
Well, that was short. On to the next chapter! The hand is revealed to be attached to a massive dragon, also sporting a badass design, looking like a cross between Igneel and an edgelord. He's loud and angry that Natsu is losing to Mercuphobia, who is only at half power apparently, and offers his own fire. But he shows off by practically incinerating the entire area in flame!

Mercuphobia puts out the flames to protect himself, and this new dragon boasts his flames can burn the water, despite what Pokemon may have you believe. The dragon refuses to fight himself however, and says Natsu should eat his flames, which Natsu is against. The dragon reveals he wants Natsu to get stronger, so they can have a deathmatch later, before showing his human form to be Ignia, son of Igneel!

I desperately need to see Igneel's human form now. This series will be a waste if we don't see it.
In our third chapter, Ignia tells Natsu that he is the real son, despite Natsu being recognised as such by Igneel. (Yes, apparently Igneel also had the power to choose a human form if he so wished). It turns out that Ignia's true anger is not from the lack of recognition, but Natsu killing Acnologia before he himself could get the chance to. He wants Natsu to be stronger, and isn't above burning Natsu's friends to do so. With that threat, Ignia leaves.

The others catch up to Natsu as he leaves, and after some hesitation and stubbornness, he eats up the flames of Ignia for a power boost to do some incredible damage to Mercuphobia. His strength is so strong and fierce that, for the first time, Lucy feels afraid of his fire.

NATSU SMASH! NATSU ALWAYS ANGRY!
The Ignia-flamed Natsu is now in full effect here, with him finally dominating Mercuphobia. As he thinks of Ignia (who can blame him?), Natsu requests help from everyone. They all charge together to restrain him, while Lucy just watches and Caramille cries. Natsu finally brings the beast down, but he's losing control and so Lucy has to stop him. How? The exact same way you're used to... with her hugging him from behind until he gains his senses again.

Opinion: I call dibs on Ignia.

If it isn't obvious yet, I'm in love. Ignia is exactly the amount of juice and power I needed for Fairy Tail 100 Year Quest, even if he does look like Senku from Dr Stone (which I still wholeheartedly recommend). He's a vicious character with a passion for violence, but he also feels more controlled than Zancrow or Jackal ever did. When Ignia entered the story, he took over in both presence and drama, which is a huge relief because this Mercuphobia drama is making me sleepy.

The downside of having a (sort of) monthly manga is that longer arcs feel more dragged out, even if they only last as long as a weekly release's. We've been dealing with Mercuphobia's problems now since January, and that's too long to stay invested in one character going crazy, especially when all personality has been blasted off for his rampage. None of this is badly done per se, but I think someone needs to realise they have to change the layout of this series. Longer chapters or releasing them more frequently would be a huge help for everyone, including the heroes and villains.

Well, we all know what reference to make here.
Surprisingly, we've had no breaks from this either. Not one big scene of Touka, Jellal, Gajeel or any of the other side characters. And that's a shame really, because I do so enjoy them. It might have helped with the awkward release schedule if we could have a reprieve and see how everyone is doing, or get a few laughs from a silly scenario they're in.

It sucks for Mercuphobia, but he's barely in my head now because of Ignia's threat. Natsu has found an opponent stronger than him, and this won't be one he's allowed to get back-up against, at least I hope not. We all know that "friendship is power" but even Acnologia took some actual effort and physical support. Natsu can't just scream and bash him to the ground eventually, can he? ........can he?

Get over it, it's been months now.
The action has been fine enough, even if it feels like only Natsu needs to be here right now. The highlight of it all was the newest chapter, with Ignia's flames causing Natsu to go haywire until Lucy pushed her boobs against his back. People will say it's the typical and overused cliche of the girl hugging the guy to make him sane again, but we all know it was the boobs. Could this finally be us seeing a glimpse of what E.N.D should have been?

No Manga Rating this time, due to so many chapters at once.

Best Part: Ignia!

Worst Part: Mercuphobia mad for several months.

Maybe Killua should have tried this during THAT scene.
