Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Chapters 23 to 26 Review - Knock on Wood.

Written by Shiggins

From end to beginning.

A strange review this time, with half of it focusing on the end of the Mercuphobia arc, and the other half focusing on a very strange repetition (and possibly homage) to Edolas. It might feel like it's taking forever to progress, but at least we have a fun time until then, and we're getting some much-needed character development too, so can't be too upset with it.

Juvia, that umbrella is going to break.
The battle is over, and the town is safe. Ignia is gone, and Natsu watches the people as he broods. Natsu asks for confirmation about what happened, and is told that Lucy stopped him from going haywire, and interacting with her starts to cheer him up. Back to the city, Gray is revealing to the citizens that they used to be human, and as they start to tear up over Mercuphobia... he shows up again!

A rejected chapter, perhaps?
Yeah, he's fine, but it turns out he's been drained of all his magic and is now a regular human. We get a brief glimpse of Elefseria in shock as the symbol on his wall reveals that the Water God Dragon is defeated, and we finish the first chapter with the head of Diabolos, Georg Raizen, getting told about Fairy Tail and getting excited over tasting dragon meat. Oh and Touka is literally bringing the supporting cast to the main story via boat. If anything, I'm grateful to her.

In our next chapter, Mercuphobia is in shock to hear Ignia came to the city, and tells them how he is definitely Igneel's son. Mercuphobia says that Ignia is the most powerful of the Gods, and he's the most destructive. We then finally get told about the other dragons: Aldron, the Wood God Dragon. Selene, the Moon God Dragon. And Beerness, the Metal God Dragon. And while he doesn't know the exact location, he does tell the group of one of the locations that might work for their quest, known as the Giltena continent.

I feel like Mashima-senpai would draw Ichiya forever if he could.
Finally, the group are moving again. A bit of banter involving avoiding a train, (seriously, this franchise gets a lot of mileage from motion sickness) and we move forward a bit to learn from Lucy's narration book that they're heading towards the Wood God Dragon, Aldron! Chapter ends on a joke, and move to the drama of the Wood God Dragon...

WRONG!

No, our next two chapters are surprisingly fanservice but not in the way you expect from Fairy Tail. No Only some jiggling boobs or pecs, but the rest is fixated on a new Guild called Fairy Nail... You can see where this is going, can't you? Yes, a new group of doppelgangers, all of whom are celebrities! Erza is confused for Erkis, a stage actress, and is immediately hounded by fans until the real Erkis arrives to save her.

Suck it, Star Wars!
Nack (Natsu) is a huge star that's hooking up with his manager Lucia (Lucy), Glen (Gray) is a pole dancer, Juvina (Juvia) is a topless dancer, Wendill (Wendy) is a child prodigy, Charlotte (Carla) is an idol with a pet cat (Happy), and the majority of supporting characters you actually care about make a brief appearance also. None of this makes any sense really, but it's fun. Finally, they get on the train to leave but... uh oh... Erza swapped with Erkis so she could be on the stage! LOL! #hilarious. End scene.

The final chapter of this review surprisingly continues the doppelganger-story, but forgets the Erza/Erkis joke. Gray is thinking about Juvia during the train's stop, when he runs into Juvina, then spends the day with her. Later, she talks to him about how he's in love with Juvia and Juvina says she and Glen aren't together despite her efforts, and Gray confirms he feels he's not good enough for Juvia yet.

Ha. Grand Blue. (It's funny if you know that series.)
Then she flashes him. Gray remembers the scar she got from the encounter with Invel, and Gray promises to be with Juvia eventually. Glen shows up and reveals Juvina was having a laugh, and the two are actually dating, and Juvina isn't a topless dancer. Back at the train, Lucy is in a tracksuit because Natsu accidently burned her clothes again, and this is when Juvia suddenly appears out of nowhere!

Opinion: Couples are gross. All happy and disgusting together. Yuck.

Finally, the Mercuphobia stuff is officially over. Maybe he'll make a grand return later on for a big "Assemble!" scene during the climax, but it's great to be moving forward again. I'm 100% sure I'll be nicer to this arc in the long-run, but I was fed up. And I've talked about it enough in past reviews, so let's move on too.

We finally know the other five Gods, and they aren't all what you'd expect! Moon especially sounds plain awesome, and we've got another metal one, which almost confirms that Gajeel will have a big part to play in the future thankfully. It's not as fun if we don't have Gajeel around to cause mayhem and mischief. He's the best character!

Motherhood.
Fairy Nail is a cute concept that is hopefully done now. We've dealt with doppelgangers before, quite a few times with Lucy for some reason, but I think I'm over it now. What we got was fun, silly and reminiscent of Edolas without the drama behind it. It was harmless, and mostly just an excuse to have Lucy and Natsu (CENSORED) without changing the story.

To be fair, at least it gave Gray some development in the romantic department. He's still prolonging the inevitable copulation, but at least something is happening there. I don't understand why every shonen out there has to wait until the very end to have two characters get together since I think it'd be fun to see a relationship develop during an adventure, but we'll get there one day.

Also, what are we thinking about Juvia's appearance at the end? Is this a shapeshifter? Possessed? I'm thinking controlled. Definitely controlled. Evil Fairy Tail!

Manga Rating: 4/5

Best Part: Gray x Juvia shippers can finally get excited.

Worst Part: More doppelgangers.

Reminds me of the 2nd OVA. We need more of them.

  1. I get the feeling that Mashima is seeing how far he can push the envelope with his fanservice. (And I'm 99% sure there is some sort of mirror magic involved.)

It warms my heart to see that I'm not the only person that thinks the side characters are way more interesting than the main bunch.

    1. I've always felt like Mashima is one step away from snapping, and finally living out his dream of drawing nipples. Probably saving that for the ultimate finale or something, and he'll laugh as he's escorted out the building because he went out doing what he always wanted.

Thank you! I mean, how can anyone disagree? Gajeel, Laxus, Gildarts, Sting, Rogue and so many others are such fun. The main four are good, Erza and Lucy being the best, but the others just rule!

      Thanks for reading!
