Top 5 Disappointing Moments of 2013

 Written by: ClayDragon and Micha

The best thing about reading manga is the reactions they can get out of us with just a piece of image. We don’t care if it’s fiction; it brings us laughter, makes us cry like a bitch, outrages us, and maybe gives us a boner too.

And no matter how good your favorite manga is, occasionally it has its ups and down. Just like how there are certain moments that excite us; there will be moments when you feel you’re let down, as a reader.  And to highlight these moments of 2013, we’ve compiled 5 disappointing/annoying moments we’ve perceived this year.

5. The Cricket Match (Black Butler)

Black Butler seems to take pride in the fact that it’s set in England, so it was only a matter of time before cricket came up in some shape or form. It’s just a shame that it was done so poorly. For starters, Black Butler is a monthly series, so you’d expect it to move along at a fairly rapid pace to avoid the audience becoming bored. Sadly, this was not the case. From the very beginning of the cricket mini-arc (when the teams were introduced) to the end (when the winning team sailed down the river), this lasted 7 chapters, going from midway through October 2012 to midway through May of 2013.

Well, it took seven months, but it's finally over.

Why Sai is Fucking Awesome

Written by: Micha

Sai is one of the many characters in Naruto who gave me the impression of an excellent shinobi. He is also one of the very few characters in the fandom who is neither overrated nor underrated and I must say that his nature is very thrilling and- UGGH FUCK this politeness! Sai is FUCKING awesome shit!

You wanna know why? I’ll fucking tell you why!

1. He always has a badass fake smile. Now tell me that this doesn’t turn you on. He has a bitching fake smile on his face ALL THE FUCKING TIME that puts fucking Elton John to shame! He can say “I killed your puppy.” and still be giving you that hot shit ass smile as if he had recently discovered the fucking marijuana!

Fairy Tail Chapter 365 Review - Fanservice Turns Dark

Written by: Shiggins

Another extra-long chapter of drama!

Natsu and Happy arrive at the remains of the Ex-Chairman's home, but he's too late to save Erza and Mirajane. There is a heavy smell of herbs in the air and Natsu realises it was a sleeping drug that was coming from the tea (I told you so!). Natsu gets angry and literally destroys the entire house and although we first thought that was because he was letting out some rage, it turns out that he was actually burning all the herbs.

You Know It's Going To Be A Great Day When It Starts With Chibis!

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Hinata

Favorite personality trait:
Shyness. It’s a good and bad thing. It gives her a huge cuteness factor, and you really start to feel sympathy for her. But it’s also a irritation factor. The way she keeps stuttering and fainting when she sees Naruto gets on your nerves. I really hope she keeps getting less shy and speaks her mind more often, like she did during the war a few times now.

Bleach 563 Review – “Superstar Never Die”

Bleach 563 Review – “Superstar Never Die”

Looks like it wasn’t so quick after all…

After being sliced in the stomach by Renji’s attack, it looks as if Mask is ready to fall…until he simply stands up straight and states that he won’t die by Renji’s hand. He then calls upon James, who is still somehow alive (and able to grow new bodies from the remains of his previous one). As every James cheers for him, Mask begins to grow and grow in strength.

Monday, December 23, 2013

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Madara

Favorite personality trait:
Self-confidence. Madara knows he’s one of the most powerful shinobi and it shows in everything he does. The way he fights, talks. Everything.

Fairy Tail Chapter 364 Review - The Bigger The Beard, The Bigger The Bastard!

Written by Shiggins

I love longer chapters and the amount of drama they give!

In this extra long chapter, we started off with Erza and Mirajane meeting the ex-chairman of the council, Crawford Seam. I have nicknamed him Jumbobeard. They first mention about how they wish they knew where Jellal was, and Erza saying he'd be fine. We then discover that Crawford Seam actually remembers Erza from many years ago, when Natsu pretended to be Erza to help her escape a false trial. For those of you who don't remember this moment, go to the very beginning of the Galuna Island Arc, also known as the first arc to feature Lyon. (And one of my least favourites.)

Bleach 562 Review – “The Villain 2”

Bleach 562 Review – “The Villain 2”
Written by: ClayDragon

Well that was…surprisingly quick.

After Renji’s surprise entrance last week, Rukia lands beside him and he tells her to look after Rose and Kensei whilst he fights Mask. Agreeing, Rukia picks up the two wounded Captains and moves away, leaving Renji on his own. Confused, Mask asks why Renji and Rukia aren’t ganging up on him, and states that all villains use dirty tricks to win. Renji’s only response to this is to claim that he’ll be cowardly enough to win.

Bleach 561 Review – “The Villain”

Bleach 561 Review – “The Villain”
Written by: ClayDragon

We now have a new contender for the title of ‘Creepiest Bankai’!

Continuing the fight, Kensei gets back up from being knocked down by Mask De Masculine, and flies towards him, only to be intercepted and kneed in the stomach. Before he can react, he’s grabbed by Mask, who performs a ‘Star Headbutt’ on him. Taking the opportunity, Kensei punches him in the chest with his Bankai, but this has no effect on Mask, who grabs his fist and says that the attack won’t work on him.

Attack on Titan Chapter 52 Review – “Krista Lenz”

Attack on Titan Chapter 52 Review – “Krista Lenz”

Before I start this, I’d like to make it clear that this review is essentially a trial run. If I can keep up with reviewing both Bleach and Attack on Titan, as well as the weekly Top 10s/Anime Reviews, then I will happily do so. However, if it turns out that doing all of that will be impossible, then I’ll stop reviewing AoT and focus solely on Bleach and my other weekly articles.

Fairy Tail Chapter 363 Review - Is Elfman Going To Have To Choke A Bitch?

Our 200th post!

Written by: Shiggins

I still don't know what's going on with the hair!

Well, finally we move on and see what's happening with other teams of Fairy Tail. It turns out that both Gajeel's team, which consists of Team Shadow Gear, and Gray's team, which is just Juvia, were too late. Juvia tells Makarov via a Communication Lacrima that it was a fight, and for some reason there are black lines all over the place. This just leaves Elfman and Lisanna to let us know how everything went.

One Piece 730 Review

Written by: PorcelainDragon

First up is the cover story, which is about Caribou. I love cover stories, but Caribou wasn't interesting before, and he isn't interesting now. X Drake is cool but his coolness can't outweigh Caribou, who is severely overweight.
Badass meets fatass
So we see in the first panel, a glorious establishing shot. Showing us where all characters are relative to each other. Take notes, Kubo.

After shooting Law, Doflmingo blames Law for the fraud. Considering how he managed to con his way to the throne, it's very in character. Of course, the public believes him. Luffy get's pissed at Doflamingo, but Doflamingo says that it’s his job to take care of Law. Zoro and Kinemon attack the Shichibukai, but Fujitora steps in to block the attack.

Bleach 560 Review – “Rages at Ringside”

Bleach 560 Review – “Rages at Ringside”
Written by: ClayDragon

Apparently, wrestling moves are now more than a match for swords.

As Rukia and Renji fall towards the battlefield, Mask De Masculine watches them and asks himself if he should go over and investigate what’s happening. He then asks for James’ opinion, to which his follower/groupie/mole person says he can get lots of attention for investigating the falling objects. Mask agrees, and just as he begins to run away his foot is caught by the chains on Kazeshini. As he bends down to take off the chains, Shuhei asks Mask if he thinks he’s won.

Things I Hate In Shonen Manga

Written by: Micha.

Picture this. You have a huge stock of your favorite pizza lined up for you with your most favorite pizza toppings (if you hate pizza, get the fuck out) but the catch is, it has olives too and you hate olives. The olives were tampering the flavor of your food. It was disgusting you. It was making you vomit.

I get the same feeling every time they ruin my favorite shonen manga with little things that gets on my nerves. And I must warn you that this article is where I will look like a narrow-minded, conservative, intolerant little piece of shit to some of you, because what I hate in shonen will be mostly what you love about it.

I must confess that I’m an out-and-out sexist. Despite being a woman myself, I have been giving my middle finger to most of my species. There’s just something about stereotypical women that makes my blood boil every time I encounter one. So naturally, my interests and preferences in most things lie on common ground with those of men.

Let me tell you this. Shonen was created for the purpose of promoting an idea of heroic young boys. It exists for the purpose of making nerdy boys feel special and courageous in an entertaining and educational way. Shonen is their turf. Shonen is the geeky retreat for them. And whenever there’s anything beautiful such as that, women just have to butt in and ruin it.

Fairy Tail Chapters 361 and 362 Review - Bring On The Beast!

Written by: Shiggins

(Since I was busy last week, I'm including last week's review in this week's.)

Jackal shows true evil!

So, we go back to that old man Mikelo who is currently running as fast as he can and demands random people to save his life because he's an Ex-Council member and that makes him think his life is ultimately important. Personally, I find it a bit silly he's running around revealing himself to people he can't trust but he is desperate so I suppose rational thinking isn't likely here. Wendy and Lucy try to attack Jackal but the explosions seem to just blow them away. (I'm not sorry for the pun.)

Bleach 559 Review – “The Night Right”

Bleach 559 Review – “The Night Right”
Written by: ClayDragon

In which nothing much actually happens.

Inside Shunsui’s office, Haschwalth notes that the fights seem to be going evenly, and Shunsui agrees with him. Haschwalth then draws his sword, saying that it’s his role to make sure the scales lean to the Vandenreich’s side, and he shatters Nanao’s barrier with a single stroke. He explains that he gradually absorbed the Reishi comprising the barrier, and weakened it to the point of being able to break through it.

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Lee

Favorite personality trait:
His persistence to prove everyone wrong. He believes in his own skills and will try anything to prove it to others. And even after he’s been through hard times, he isn’t giving up.
Favorite relationship:
Guy-sensei. The way Lee looks up to him and the way Guy keeps supporting Lee, is just amazing. He literally tries to copy Guy (even his outfit), but if that helps him to reach his goal… why not? Without Guy-sensei he would have given up a long time ago, so I really hope Guy keeps supporting him no matter what happens.

Top 10 Anime Lists Update

Top 10 Lists Update
Written by ClayDragon

This update has the Jiraiya Seal of Approval.

As you probably noticed, the previous Top 10 list was delayed by a week due to my workload at university. Unfortunately, my workload has in no way decreased, and it's becoming increasingly difficult for me to find time to write the articles.

Monday, November 25, 2013

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Izumo

Favorite personality trait:
Pride. In contrary of Kotetsu, he’s proud to be one of Tsunade’s errand boys. That’s a good thing, since Kotetsu will try to avoid work all the time and he’s the one dragging him back to finish the job.
Favorite relationship:
Kotetsu. His loyal partner. I really love this relationship. They know each other so well and know exactly what to say to the other to get him to do something.

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Sai

Favorite personality trait:
Empathy. I know it’s horrible what Danzo did to him by ‘taking away’ his feelings, but it makes him such an entertaining character. The way Sai reacts to emotions and tries to understand them, is actually very interesting.
Favorite relationship:
Naruto. I’ll never forget the moment that Sai decided to change his mission of killing Sasuke, into a mission to save Sasuke. Only because he was interested in the strong bond Naruto had with him before he left Konoha. I just loved this moment.

Meanwhile, Bambietta is in shock over the fact that she was hit, and realises that her bombs were pushed back into her body before they could explode, causing them to explode inside her. Defeated, she trails smoke behind her as she falls from the sky.

Top 10 Anime Duos

 OtakuNuts' One-Year Anniversary!

Top 10 Anime Duos
Written by: ClayDragon & Shiggins

You know those two people. The ones who are almost always together, to the point where it’s virtually impossible to imagine one without the other. Be they a couple, siblings, or just really good friends, they’re always much better together than they are alone. This collaborative list between Shiggins and myself brings together the top ten duos in anime.

Sorry about the delay on this one, I've been under a lot of work lately. Enjoy!

WARNING: Due to the nature of this list, there may be spoilers/yaoibait here. You have been warned.

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Shizune

Favorite personality trait:
I actually like her personality as a whole. She’s timid, but not afraid to speak her mind or to become quite aggressive when it comes to protecting the ones she cares about. There really isn’t anything that I don’t like about her personality.
Favorite relationship:
Tsunade,  of course. She really cares for Tsunade and helps her whenever she can. If there’s anyone who knows all about Tsunade, it’s Shizune.

Fairy Tail Chapter 360 Review - And Boom Goes The Dynamite

Jackal vs Dragon Round 1

So we start immediately where we left last week, with Natsu and Jackal having a staring contest. With Wendy and Lucy going to help Mikelo get away (and his grumpy attitude starting to just annoy me now), Jackal does some type of spinning dance that reminds me of that Last Airbender film that everyone despises. Within seconds, the entire surrounding area explodes in what I personally felt was a bit over-the-top, but effective nonetheless.

Bleach 557 Review – “I Already Threw Away My Life”

Bleach 557 Review – “I Already Threw Away My Life”
Written by: ClayDragon

On exposition and the nature of immortality.

Continuing on from last week's chapter, Komamura has released his new Bankai and he starts smashing buildings in an attempt to hit Bambietta. As she flies around the battlefield, she continues to taunt Komamura, and fires an attack at his Bankai. However, it grabs her Reishi blast in mid-air, and whilst its hand explodes, the wound heals up almost immediately.

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Jiraiya

Favorite personality trait:
Perviness. The way he admitted that he was a super pervert, showed that he wasn’t ashamed of it. And it also gave him the inspiration needed for his Icha Icha novels. But it also gave Naruto a way to get him to do things while using the Sexy no Jutsu.
Favorite relationship:
Even though he tried to hit on her when they first met and he was a real show off, they became really good friends. The way they made a bet involving his life when he went on his last missions, showed how much she cared about him. Too bad this was the only bet she every won.

Fairy Tail Chapter 359 Review - Animal Week

Any furries in the audience?

We start our week in Tartaros HQ, where Tempester was regaining his old body and telling Kyouka how he always forgets his name every time he dies, which I found weird because he remembers everything else. Apparently, Tempester will take longer than usual to regenerate due to Kyouka creating a new demon. And it's Minerva! So, I'm happy because Minerva is still alive and she'll be becoming a super-powerful demon soon, which means Erza can't win so easily next time, thank God.

It Was Only A Matter Of Time Until Mashima Put In Tentacles With Naked Girls

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Sasori

Favorite personality trait:
Ambition. He desired everlasting existence, which he finally acquired by turning himself into a puppet. But like Kankuro said during the War, he didn’t become immortal, his puppets did. All because he put his soul and heart into the while creating them.
Favorite relationship:
Chiyo. She took care of him after his parents died and taught him how to make puppets. She was the one how gave him a chance to be happy, because he made the Mother and Father puppet thanks to her. Too bad she was also the only one capable of killing him.

Bleach 556 Review – “The Wolfsbane”

Bleach 556 Review – “The Wolfsbane”
Written by: ClayDragon

What…I can’t…What is this I don’t even...

Firstly, it turns out that Bambietta’s attack hit Shinji, and he collapses in a smoking heap as another explosion goes off behind him. Bambietta says that it doesn’t matter if Shinji’s Zanpakuto disoriented her, as she can just blow up everything and kill him that way. She reveals that her Sternritter letter of ‘E’ stands for ‘the Explode’, and she uses her Vollständig wings to fly up and bombard the area below her.

Fairy Tail Chapter 358 Review - I'll Choke You, Bitch

And the death toll rises.

To start off this surprisingly dark chapter, we go to where we left off last week's chapter with Laxus about to fight the member of Tartaros. Laxus catches up and the cloak comes off to show how how he really looks and is predicted, he is Tempester of the Nine-Demons. Next up is some intense battling which results in Laxus proving once again that he seems to the most overly powered character in Fairy Tail, by defeating Tempestra before the chapter is halfway finished.

Bleach 555 Review - "The Hero"

Bleach 555 Review - "The Hero"
Written by: ClayDragon

In which nothing much actually happens.

Firstly, it turns out that Ichigo's time with Squad Zero has come to an end, as he appears at the exit wearing a new outfit. Apparently, he isn't going back the way he came, as the pillar he arrived in has disappeared. Instead, Senjumaru summons a huge spiral staircase, and Tenjirō tells Ichigo that it will take him a week to reach the bottom. Instead of Ichigo getting mad about the time the journey would take, he instead accepts it, and states that it'll take him half a day if he hurries.

Why Uchiha Clan is Shit

Written by: Micha

I imagine writing about this topic would be the fanbase community equivalent of digging my own grave, and it isn’t in my best interest to get virtually egged by the armada of Uchiha fanboys. No wait, it is, actually. And this armada of fanboys have been dominating our fandom since Kishimoto lost his marbles somewhere around mid-Shippuden and let his Uchiha-loving dick take over the writing. Thus, loathing this ludicrous and deranged clan seemed the most reasonable thing to do.

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Orochimaru

Favorite personality trait:
His determination. Even though he used it to be able to use every technique ever created, he was very determined. He never gave up when conducting experiments and because of that, he always got the results he was hoping for.
Favorite relationship:
I’m going with Kabuto. I think Orochimaru really cared for Kabuto and trusted him. He made him the way he is now, but Kabuto’s still following Orochimaru’s goal. But I’m curious about what Orochimaru will do with him after the war is over.

Fairy Tail Chapter 357 Review - A Side Order Of Pain!

Nostalgia resteraunt, anyone?

Ok, first things first. We saw the personalities of each demon as they walked together and said boring and cliche one-liners. Let's just simplify this, shall we?

The Dignified One

Thursday, October 24, 2013

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Anko

Favorite personality trait:
I actually really like her sadistic side. But she always does her research before going on a mission, which I also like about her.
Favorite relationship:
I would say Orochimaru, but only when he was her mentor. After he abandoned her, she started hating him and changed her goal into killing him. There isn’t any other notable relationship I can think of…

Bleach 554 Review – “Desperate Lights”

Bleach 554 Review – “Desperate Lights”
Written by: ClayDragon

Soul Society is drowning in despair, and Yhwach is throwing them anchors.

From a nearby rooftop, Bazz-B looks over and sees Cang Du frozen in Hitsugaya's ice cross. A bit annoyed, he turns around and moves off. Hitsugaya, meanwhile, tries to make his way over to Matsumoto, but collapses with exhaustion before making it more than a few steps. As he hits the ground, his ice wings begin to disintegrate.

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Hashirama

Favorite personality trait:
His ‘Will of Fire’. He always wanted to protect his friends, family and all the villagers no matter what happened. And he even sacrificed his own life protecting them. The way his belief was passed on to next generations, shows how much Hashirama did for Konoha.
Favorite relationship:
Madara. Eternal rivals, but once best friends. They had the same dream, or at least Hashirama thought they did. The way Madara became, was also the reason Hishirama became the strong shinobi he is today. He still tries to understand Madara and hopefully he will succeed.

Fairy Tail Chapter 356 Review - And So It Begins...

I'm already loving this arc.

One of the biggest problems of the previous arc was how it started. There was no big build-up or intensity that made us feel like everything was scary or life-threatening. Nothing happened that made anyone worry for the characters or grip the audience. Everything felt random and not thought-out at all. Thankfully, this arc changes all that with a mass murder and appearance of villains.

Is Lahar Making Lovey Eyes At Doranbolt?

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Asuma

Favorite personality trait:
Being layed-back. Even though he avoided doing something as much as he could, he knew exactly how to train and motivate his team. It showed what a dedicated sensei he was.
Favorite relationship:
Shikamaru. This relationship is one the closest ones in the series, in my opinion. The way they always played shogi, because this was the perfect way for Shikamaru to develop his analyzing skills, showed how much Asuma knew about him. And of course the way Shikamaru reacted after Asuma’s death, was the best way to illustrate their strong bond.

Bleach 553 Review – “Frozen Cross”

Again with the crazy resilience!

As Cang Du advances towards Hitsugaya, one of the wings given to him by Hyorinmaru fall off due to Urahara’s pill. At the same time, Hitsugaya stands up, with one of Hyorinmaru’s wings. As Cang Du watches, he realises that his medallion has returned to normal, and asks what Hitsugaya did to steal back his Bankai. He replies that maybe Hyorinmaru just wanted to come back, and prepares to confront Cang Du.

Top 10 Anime Antagonists

Top 10 Anime Antagonists

For the purpose of this list, the word ‘antagonist’ refers to the main enemy of a series, and not necessarily their moral alignment.

Fairy Tail Chapter 355 Review - There Is Actually A Plot In Here

Written by Shiggins

Damn, Hiro Mashima needs to stop loving baths so much.

So to start off this chapter, we finally return to Walrot Seeken who gives them praise and a potato. That's right. A potato. To put it simply, Walrot is perhaps the biggest troll of all time and constantly loves to make fun of the group. His catchphrase "I'm just kidding" is starting to get repetitive. He also has another reward and this is when audiences will get a bit annoyed.

Character Birthday Challenge ~ Naruto

Favorite personality trait:
His strong will. Seriously, after all that he’s been through he still doesn’t give up. I really like this about him and I really hope he will never lose his will to protect the ones he loves. With that’s happening right now, it may happen sooner as we expect, but I don’t think he will ever lose it.
Favorite relationship:
Iruka. He was the first one to acknowledge him and he still believes in him, no matter what happens. Too bad we don’t see much conversations between them anymore, but I hope there will be in the future.
Favorite fight:
Even though it’s not over yet… I really like his fight with Obito. The way he developed and analyzed everything that happened in the fight, is amazing. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Favorite jutsu:
Everything Kurama related. I really like the jutsu Naruto’s able to use when he’s using Kurama’s chakra and when they’re working together. Every new transformation is even more awesome than the previous one.
Favorite outfit:
His outfit when he’s in Bijuu mode. He looks amazing in it.
Favorite random thing:
His whiskers. I know they're typical for Naruto, but I still like them a lot.
Personal thoughts:
It took me a while before I actually liked him, but now I think he’s just amazing. The way developed his skills and also his relationships with the villagers, his team mates, sensei’s,… is amazing. He never gives up and he keeps believing in everyone who’s every betraded his or Konoha’s trust.  Amazing character and I really hope the series isn’t ending soon.

Bleach 552 Review – “The Fundamental Virulence”

Bleach 552 Review – “The Fundamental Virulence”

Hooray for science!

Still with Hitsugaya, Bazz-B is slightly annoyed that Cang Du has arrived to kill his opponent, to which Cang Du reveals that Yhwach ordered the Quincies to kill those whose Bankais they stole. Reaching under his coat, Cang Du pulls out Matsumoto and throws her on the ground. He then extends his iron claws and states that Hitsugaya should die next to Matsumoto, claiming that it’s his ‘style’ to kill those who lived together. At this point, he unleashes Hitsugaya’s Bankai and compliments it, saying that letting it live on after Hitsugaya’s death makes him sorry.
