Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Chapter 69 and Eden's Zero Chapters 118 and 119 Review

 Written by Shiggins

Theme: Things I want to see Mashima-senpai play with.

Maybe I'm just wanting to enjoy myself more these days, or maybe the chapters got the serious upgrade they needed, because I'm walking away with more confidence for the upcoming chapters now thanks to the developments and thingamajigs that were introduced. In fact, it's safe to say I'd be heartbroken and bitching furiously if they weren't played with... Anyway, happy review time!

She keeps getting better! I want one! And I want the claws too!

Fairy Tail

Wendy has healed Faris, and is surprised how well the process went due to all the excessive magic of Elentir making her abilities stronger. The group are currently on top of a cloud, and Erza says they haven't forgiven Faris for what she did, but they will focus on stopping Selene. We get a surprising cameo from Irene again, telling Wendy the magic of Elentir is unnatural and caused her to reappear so easily.

Irene went from being a Big Bad of the final arc, to having a shit self-inflicted death, to a naked ghost. That's actually hilarious when you think about it.
The group plan to go to Touka's hometown, but are suddenly surprised by a giant hand that comes out from the ocean. And admittedly, I found it funny with how unbothered by it's existence Touka and Faris were. However, despite usually being peaceful, the hand attacks them due to some strange patterns, most likely a sign of eeeeevil corruption, and the cloud splits apart. The group are separated.

"Ooooh ho ho ho ho!"
Gray, Natsu and Happy are together in an area of snow, where the weather rises instead of falls. Lucy is completely abandoned in a massive forest, immediately chased by a creepy threat straight out of your worst hentai dreams. This is when she's given a surprise, as Taurus makes an appearance and saves her, despite her having forgotten her keys back home. And Erza, Wendy and Carla are in what appears to be an abandoned city, full of weird glitchy magical people, while being watched over by one of Selene's followers, Youko.

Opinion: Hooray for hands!

And hooray for new worlds that actually present interesting challenges and opportunities! If you've been reading my reviews lately, you'll know I've been a sour lemon over the dreary pages of sitting down and talking for what felt like an eternity. So this new chapter gets them literally thrown away from Faris and into a new terrain full of possibilities!

Ha! Suck it, Nico Robin!
I'm not pretending the chapter is perfect, of course, and I was trying to figure out what my biggest problem with it was and I think I've got it figured it out. In this first chapter, we've seen rising snow, giant hands from the sea, weird tongue-eyes creatures and some sort of glitchy people that wouldn't look out of place in a Doctor Who episode (more specifically, Flatline. What a great episode!). Each of these are cool, but there's no real connection to them or theme. It's not a sci-fi world, or a forest world, or whatever. I suppose the point of this world is for it to be wild and absurd, but there's no connecting theme yet so I'm struggling to understand exactly how this place works. That will probably change as soon as we see an actual city of people, but I felt it was worth mentioning today.

Word of the day: Adorbs!
Congrats to Faris though. She's given me a moment I liked, her first since her retcon. Touka and Faris acting as if everyone is weird for being surprised at a giant hand is a good gag. If we're going to be stuck with her for longer, it'll be good to let her be the guide who acts as if they're the weird ones. And we've now seen Lucy's Celestial Spirits have the potential to wander around the world without her support. God, if they don't take advantage of this in every way possible... And that's before we get to the fact that we have no idea how it will affect the others. Irene taking over Wendy's body to have some fun as a mortal? Natsu's fire going uncontrollable? Gray accidentally freezing his limbs shut? There's way too much to ignore here.

So yeah, not a perfect chapter but lots for a writer to play with. Let's keep it going!

Manga Rating: 3.5/5

Best Part: All these opportunities!

Worst Part: Elentir feels disconnected so far.

Eden's Zero

Orc is defeated, and tells Shiki that despite his strength, he could never defeat Shura, the strongest Gravity Ether user. And with that foreshadowing, we return to Weisz and Couchpo arriving at the Eden's Zero ship to find out the situation, and he is told that there is a satellite spreading the virus, so he should modify it to restore everyone back to normal.

Surprisingly, we see Elsie on the planet now and in a pouty mood because of everything preventing her from cuisine. And then we see Elsie's Ether ability, and it is so blatantly Erza's magic that I'm not even mad. Can she get any more obvious and reminiscent of Fairy Ta-SHE JUST USED GRAND CHARIOT!

Sailor Moon, eat your heart out!
We quickly see a glimpse of Justice and his group on this planet too, hunting Elsie, before we cut to Rebecca in pain and alone against Britney, with Happy and Pino defeated. Rebecca throws the shoes off to fight back, and she's not the only ready to fight back as Best Girl Homura stands up to endure the heat and fight Mora. Our chapter ends with a glimpse at the womaniser and casual murderer Poseidon Shura, the son of Nero.

The second chapter opens with the dogfight from before, with Hermit and Weisz now taking a ship to attack the satellite and bringing the squad of fighters for protection. And that's the last time we see anyone else as the rest now focuses on Homura's battle with Mora in the burning forest. Mora's glue throws trees, and his cane blocks her sword, so Homura shifts into WOLVERINE CLAWS?! Oh that's sooooo cool!

Sting and Rogue would be proud.
Of course, just making her weapon more awesome isn't enough to kill a glue man. They battle it out some more, with Mora showing sadism and desire to see Homura's face of pain, and he starts to use his glue powers to burn her bosom. In response, Homura kicks dirt at him and it sticks to his body. She keeps throwing stuff to him, but Mora scoffs and turns solid again to get it all off him... which is when Homura strikes him down.

Opinion: Claws!

Before I get to the dignified and constructive critique I am so totally known for, I must first say... Eeeeeeee it's so cool to see Homura using Wolverine claws! You might think I'm being childish and immature, and I am. It's a fun idea, and I hope to see different versions of this come up in the future. Homura should be using Deathstrike claws next. Or make her wear armour that looks like that silly Steppenwolf redesign that got released earlier this week! Either way, very fun choreography and I enjoyed this fight a lot.

I'm actually going to be surprised if this isn't a future planet.
Anyway, yes the chapters themselves. I should probably talk about them. Well, I've noticed something with Eden's Zero's villains as I read these two chapters... there's a lot of aroused sadists in this manga. In this review alone, we've got Mora burning breasts and wanting to see a literal expression of pain, while Shura's introduction involves killing women against the ceiling for speaking above their station in his presence. Honestly, all this torture on women makes watching Homura kick the shit out of Mora even more satisfying than it already was. I can't argue it's effective.

So I don't think we'll be making Shura a friend anytime soon. I was thinking he could be a clone of Shiki or maybe he'd be some sort of ally eventually and we'd see a union of Gravity Ether users, like when Natsu teams up with Gajeel and Wendy... but then Shura crushed two women against the ceiling and smirked as it rained their blood so yeah, he's a dick instead. I'm not going to pretend this might not end up in disappointment, but that doesn't mean Shura will be unenjoyable. It just means he isn't going to be displaying what I was hoping for. I'll judge him properly when he's had more time.

You know... I'm getting the distinct impression... that he's not nice.
Elsie and Justice are now on the planet too, which seems weird. Not that I'm against them both coming together and causing even more trouble in an arc full of it, but they do feel like they should have joined sooner. As it is, the arc is so busy that they feel like an afterthought right now, rather than representations of two chaotic factions at war with each other. I still can't believe that Elsie is so blatantly Erza again... that's actually funny to me.

Looking forward to Rebecca vs Britney next time!

Manga Rating: 4/5

Best Part: Homura destroys Mora with Marvel weaponry.

Worst Part: Justice and Elsie are late!

Whoever summons the Impossibeast first wins!

  1. So far Elentir looks like a promising place. The absurde amount of leaves a lot of hype for awesomes battles, and it seems like Mashima himself is willing to use this idea at the max, since he`s been teasing quite a lot about it.

Erza and Wendy are together, Irene is showing up... maybe a reunion? Last time she had a body the three of them were together, so it can be an interesting turn. Will they team up? Is Irene going to take revenge or love her daugher? Interesting.

Both EZ chapters have been good, and maybe is my love for Homura, but I prefered her battle over Shiki´s.

Im already expecting the crew to obliterate Shura. But what is wrong with EZ people? They´re all so sadistic, and some villains have a creepy obsession for women.

Anyway, good reviews as always, and watching Homura being a badass has made my week great.

    1. Mashima has clearly been building up Elentir for a few chapters now. Not in an interesting way, but he's at least been building it up so there's clearly something big planned. Maybe the world is just batshit insanity, we obviously don't know yet.

Erza getting the embarrassing mother treatment actually does sound quite fun, not going to lie. I feel like Irene wouldn't be an enemy to Erza, considering how she died, but she'd be a damn fun troll at the very least. And the possessing of Wendy would cause quite the rift as well, so there's potential for it too.

As for EZ, no I would definitely say Homura's fight was better. Homura's fight involved adapting to the situation and coming up with a new way to fight back, while Shiki went all-out to win quickly. The actual choreography was just better too, due to the difference in characters and their battle experience.

Oh Shura is definitely going to be getting an ass-kicking. In fact, I'm almost expecting him to be the main threat, rather than this Posiedon Nero we've heard about, just because of his implied connection to Shiki. And yeah, the villains are definitely making sure to be as hateable as possible. Thank god the girls in EZ are so likeable and beating the shit out of them, because I'd be worried otherwise.

Thank you very much. Homura = Best Character.
