Who I Want in Jump Force

Written by Shiggins

Fighting dreamers!

While Super Smash Bros Ultimate definitely stole the show when it came to fighting games this E3, there was another crossover battle extravaganza announced and that was Jump Force! A game featuring several different Shonen Jump characters duelling it out in a 3D environment, with locations such as New York to give the game an extra taste of pizzaz! So I decided to write out which characters I'd love to see make an appearance as a playable character in the upcoming game!

Note: There is a maximum of three per franchise, to keep the roster from going too big.

Characters that are already confirmed are Goku, Frieza, Luffy, Zoro, Naruto and Sasuke. (Light and Ryuk are in the trailer but probably not playable. We'll see.)

It turns out that there is such a thing as too much detail.

Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z)

With Goku and Frieza already in the game, it would be next-to-impossible for the Prince of All Saiyans to not make an entrance. His attacks are obvious, with the Big Bang Attack and Final Flash providing some excellent super moves for him to use on unsuspecting foes, and his usual heavy attacks for combos and satisfying victories against those who dare fight his greatness! Both Gold and Blue, please!

Nami (One Piece)

When J-Stars came out, they stupidly chose to have Boa Hancock represent the females of One Piece. Now, it is time to correct that by having badass Nami wield her signature weapon, the Clima-Tact, and literally summon the weather to assist her in fights. Creating afterimages, bringing down lightning, or pushing foes back with wind. There's a ton of potential that can be used with Nami, as other One Piece games have proven.

Ichigo Kurosaki (Bleach)

While Bleach's ending was a slog to sit through, that doesn't erase the good times we all had with Bleach. Nor does it erase the popularity that Bleach once had, especially in Western countries, so it would be foolish to not include the series. With Ichigo, players could swing around his Zangetsu, preferably in the Tensa Zangetsu form, and use a speedy barrage of flurry attacks to tear strong foes down. Oh and maybe we could temporarily transform into the Vasto Lorde for extra power?

Rukia Kuchiki (Bleach)

Bleach has dozens of potential characters to choose from, but I went with Rukia for her relevance to the story and her adorable design, as well as her gorgeous ice-themed moves that are different from a certain other ice-using character in Bleach. Rukia's skills range from simple spell blasts or tying foes down, to huge ice towers that explode into shards. Rukia has always been great to watch, so make it happen!

Grimmjow (Bleach)

I was tempted to go with Aizen for the "villain role" of Bleach, but I realised that Aizen's best assets are from his speeches and smirks. With Grimmjow however, a much more interesting alternative to play as comes about. His attacks are feral and fast, and transforming into his Resurrección form would provide some great animations and difficulty for that cocky bastard who beats you in every game you fight him in.

Kakashi (Naruto)

It was between Kakashi and Madara, and I chose Kakashi because Kakashi is the best ever, because he is Kakashi. A cool attitude, a fun design, and tons of moves that range from summoning big dogs to assist in battle, to summoning giant suits of armour that throw shuriken that literally create portals, make Kakashi an obvious choice. That and Madara just looks... clunky. I mean, he uses a fan? Come on!

Himura Kenshin (Rurouni Kenshin)

Shame on you for not reading this man's series! Rurouni Kenshin is fantastic, and absolutely worthy of your time that you use productively. Kenshin himself is a supremely popular character, and it'd be a waste to ignore him. Plenty of skills can be easily implemented into a video game, with his Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū sword style just perfect for both the visual and interactive medium. You'll never be upset when someone like Kenshin is cutting you down, because it looks so good.

Shishio Makoto (Rurouni Kenshin)

And here we come to the perfect villain to place as a counter to Kenshin. Shishio! Leader of the anti-government militia and complex madman bent on killing all in his path, Shishio would be great to include for both story and gameplay. Super strong, super fast, and brandishing a serrated sword, Shishio's abilities make him an obvious choice if you want to get vengeance on anyone in your path. And I haven't even talked about his unique "Three Sacred Swords" combos and his ability to wield fire!

Jonathan Joestar (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure)

A few years ago, nobody but the hardcore would know about this wonderful series. Now however, I am aware of how much of a crime it would be to not include several characters, and what better character to start us off than the very first "Jojo" himself, Jonathan! Not only does he possess a perfectly sweet attitude, but his power of "Ripple" and his signature attack, the Sunlight Yellow Overdrive, would make for some great visuals. And if we're lucky, he could use the sword too. Anime characters rarely use them, right?

Jotaro Kujo (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure)

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of his personality, but there is no denying that the third Jojo is the most famous of the family for his design and powers and would be pretty fun to play. Unlike the other Jojo on my wishlist, Kujo is packing his iconic "Stand" spirit, which means fans can get to grin from ear-to-ear as they bring out the painful combo attack and scream out with the game; ORAORAORAORAORA!

Dio Brando (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure)

However, the third spot in the Jojo franchise easily goes to the greatest villain. You thought it was Kars, but it was him, Dio! Yes, no Shonen Jump crossover game could ever be complete without the blonde man filled with evil! Whether its his vampire form in Part 1 or, the far likelier option, his flamboyant Stand-using form in Part 3, Dio would just be a blast to play. Especially if there is a taunt button.

Gon Freecss (Hunter x Hunter)

If Hunter x Hunter isn't in the game, there is no reason to buy it. Togashi might not do enough work, but when he does, it is absolute gold and the main protagonist of his best series should absolutely be playable. Gon is a fast, fun character with a massive smile and a high tolerance for pain. Thanks to his use of Nen, we could see a fun range of attacks including his Rock-Paper-Scissors ability known as "Jajanken" and his gorgeous rage form. Sadly, I doubt the music of the anime will make it though.

Killua Zoldyck (Hunter x Hunter)

And with Gon, must come his future lover, Killua. This white-haired boy is one of my all-time favourite anime characters ever, and he is too pure and beautiful to leave out. I want to control his lightning, and zoom around the battlefield like a rocket made of electricity, and I want to do all this while being as adorable as all hell!

Hisoka (Hunter x Hunter)

Of course, I love to have the villains included, and that means the obvious answer here is to have Hisoka arrive in the roster! For the facial animations alone, Hisoka would be a treat, but using his "Bungee Gum" could provide some hilarious attacks and ways to humiliate your friends in a fight, then cut their head off with his shockingly brutal attacks. Just don't let him near the kid characters.

Yusuke Urameshi (YuYu Hakusho)

Continuing my desire for the Togashi clan, let's make sure we include his previous work, YuYu Hakusho, and the protagonist of it all, Yusuke! His attacks might seem basic when compared to the characters of today, but we all recognise Yusuke's Spirit Gun and it was a blast (pun intended) to use when I played J-Stars Victory Vs. And I think we can all agree that its fun to play with any attack that has the word "Spirit" in it.

Hiei (YuYu Hakusho)

With so many wonderful characters to choose from, I had difficulty. However, the badboy Hiei won out thanks to such a wide variety of moves, an awesome design, and for the way he absolutely murdered that smug prick during the tournament! Did you see that scene?! Amazing! Anyway, Hiei can turn green and launch dragons made of shadow. Do I need to say more?

Toriko (Toriko)

I often find that the titular character of the Toriko series is an oddball. Many enjoy him, but I find him passable at best. That being said, he was a laugh to play as in J-Stars, and I am not the type to deny fans what they want, so long as they don't harass folk over it like losers demanding a Waluigi. Sadly they probably can't implement his glutton, but Toriko's cutlery-themed attacks are a lot of fun and Shonen Jump has proven to us time and time again that you can never have too many characters in orange.

Kenshiro (Fist of the North Star)

"You are already dead." Is there a gamer alive who would not desire to play as Kenshiro just so they can say that line and kill someone in Kenshiro's iconic fashion? I want to blow some folk up as one of the most over the top and ridiculous protagonists in history, after the makers of Yakuza fulfil my wish with their own game, of course.

Yugi Moto (Yu-Gi-Oh)

I like to think everyone my age has played at least one Yu-Gi-Oh game, which means they have technically played Yugi already. So imagine the burst of nostalgia you'd get for playing as the spiky-haired geek, or as his Pharaoh/ghost form which somehow expands his body and clothes but not his hair. Instead of direct combat, Yugi would work more like Ginyu from FighterZ, where he summons his monsters to attack his foes. Those foes wouldn't stand a ghost of a chance!

Seto Kaiba (Yu-Gi-Oh)

Same as Yugi, but with more money and dragons.

Izuku Midoriya (My Hero Academia)

I just did an entire article about why I adore this protagonist, but it's so great to know that I will be able to play as him soon in a huge 3D fighter. And since he's appearing in one anime game, why not bring him to the crossover game? Super strength is one of the most obvious and overused powers ever, but Midoriya's fun use of it will easily make for a fun experience. So long as I am playing as him. Nobody else.

Bakugou Katsuki (My Hero Academia)

You know what games rarely do? Blow things up. Well, we better ask the rival of Midoriya to come in and fix that by using his rage and powers of explosions to destroy every character he comes across! Imagine launching yourself across the arena with an explosion, punching an enemy in the face with an explosion, then celebrating with an explosion! EXPLOSION!

All Might (My Hero Academia)

He puts the "hero" in "My Hero Academia", and that alone makes him worthy of this list. Unlike Midoriya, All Might has utilised the super strength of One for All to its full without help and can bring out an array of different punches and kicks that can give some serious damage to the foes who would be foolish enough to stand in his way. Detroit Smash, Texas Smash, United States of Smash... Hell, maybe we'll get lucky and All Might will upgrade to an International Smash one day!

Sakata Gintoki (Gintama)

Fighting games rarely have a competent comedy character. Usually, the comedy man trips over and has supremely weak attacks, like Street Fighter's Dan Hibiki. Well, I want to laugh and kick ass at the same time, so who better than the parfait-eating lunatic Gintoki! Wielding his wooden sword as if its a truly powerful weapon as I drive his moped and break the fourth wall would be a blast! It's not just Deadpool who can see the audience, you know!

Kagura with Sadaharu (Gintama)

Dogs are cute. Redheads are cute. Playing as a redhead girl riding a giant dog? Utterly terrifying, and that is what we need! Fierce attacks that can bounce from serious to comedic, and yet I doubt Kagura would ever be the butt of the joke in this roster. With Sadaharu by her side, I know for a fact I have a few friends who would never want to play as anyone else.

Future Elizabeth (Gintama)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I want to die.

Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo (Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo)

Speaking of comedy, anime Top 10 lists often bring up the fact that there is a hilarious show called Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo, and yet I don't think anyone has ever watched it. J-Stars Victory Vs let me properly experience him however, and he is brilliant! He uses nose hairs as weapons! He summons an orange spiky ball for support! HE DANCES!

Tatsumi Oga and Baby Beel (Beelzebub)

A lot more basic than the others when you get right down to it, Oga has a very strong punch when he is holding the son of Satan on his back and gets a wicked tattoo for his troubles. And while that might sound boring, he does also get to summon demonic power and even becomes a baby-man with wings at one point. Plenty of fun to be had there.

Pegasus Seiya (Saint Seiya)

This is another of those series that I haven't had much time to check out, but it is definitely intriguing to look at. The character's armour is so garish and flamboyant, the last of a dying breed from the 80s when everything was as over the top as the drugs they were on, and he even uses the power of Greek Gods to blow up foes. In terms of sheer ridiculousness, Seiya is clearly a cut above the rest.

Arale Norimaki (Dr Slump)

Akira Toriyama is now one of the biggest mangaka of all time thanks to Dragon Ball, with its intense action, wonderful characters and beautiful art, but we should never let him forget the character obsessed with poop and gags! Which is why his previous work, Dr Slump, should be remembered by having the main protagonist Arale jump in with her overpowered strength (literally enough to break the planet) and poop-throwing powers! Because poop is hilarious!

Kankichi Ryotsu (Kochikame)

Another character that J-Stars introduced me to, Kankichi is arguably one of the most famous characters in Japanese fiction. He might have never found success beyond his homeland, but his popularity in Japan means he can't be ignored. Personally, I'd prefer to see the same joke-like abilities from J-Stars implemented here, like the rocket launcher or the wrath of his commissioner, but tighter and stronger.

Allen Walker (D. Gray-Man)

White haired protagonists make me squee, because they're all so adorable and cute! And yes, that includes Allen Walker! With such a wonderful design, I think they'd be crazy to avoid having Allen here. His anti-Akuma weapon, known as Cross, is a beautiful visual and would provide plenty of movesets for the more creative of players.

Saitama (One Punch Man)

So One Punch Man doesn't technically come out in Japan's Shonen Jump, but Viz Media has the remake licensed for the English release of SJ, so I'll count it anyway because I want to play as them! Of course, one would have to take a lot of liberties to make Saitama playable, but he would just need to be depowered slightly like Superman is in the Injustice games. That or he's the most broken fighting character of all time.

Genos (One Punch Man)

Imagine playing as Iron Man, but instead of being super-rich, you are anime! Or DC's Cyborg, but you aren't boring like the Justice League version! That's the glory of Genos, who can fly around like a badass at supreme speeds and blow up everything in his way. Giant cannons of death that can come out of his palms, and a beam big enough to obliterate a meteor... well, it would have if Genos wasn't cursed to fail at every event.

Tornado of Terror (One Punch Man)

To help our lack of loli on this roster, let's bring in Tatsumaki! Also known as the Tornado of Terror and the number 2 hero of the Hero Association, Tornado would bring in some much needed psychic-powers and levitation, which is always a fun plus for fighting games. Lifting rocks out of the ground, floating around the arena and dropping meteors that even Madara would call excessive? Yeah, I think we need her.

Senku Ishigami (Dr Stone)

This one would require some more creativity and is almost completely impossible due to how new his manga actually is, but it's a wish list so I include those I want to see! Not those who are likely to be seen! Senku from the fantastic Dr Stone is a genius scientist who uses multiple gadgets and tricks in every chapter. Gas bombs, cell phones and other creations would need to be used by Senku to make him even have a chance in this roster, but I'll leave that to my imaginary developers to handle.

Tsunayoshi Sawada (Katekyō Hitman Reborn)

Truth be told, I didn't really like Hitman Reborn as a series. It wasted a lot of time building things up and many of the characters annoyed me. I do like Tsuna however, and I know others love this show. Head of a mafia family who can shoot fire out of his hands thanks to the power given to him by a baby on his shoulder? Yeah, that's acceptable to me.

Medaka Kurokami (Medaka Box)

Mary Sues are awful in stories, but wonderful in video games. Medaka is one such example, who flaunts her body as much as her powers and would be a tank when it comes to battles. Her signature move, the Kurokami Phantom, would be a fun way to launch players across the map, and she's a female character in an anime video game so maybe we'd get to dress her up too!

Kumagawa Misogi (Medaka Box)

Cheeky bastard with the power of the perfect smug and able to erase anything in history, while acting like he should be in a Danganronpa game having sex with Kokichi Oma? Yeah, he's definitely on my roster. If for no other reason that I'd scream out Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Screw you!" every time I hit someone with his mighty screws.

Asta (Black Clover)

Honestly? I only have Asta here because I know others would like him. I don't personally care, but its for the fans! So go ahead and enjoy!

Korosensei (Assassination Classroom)

Tentacles should always be in the workplace, especially when Japan is involved. Korosensei, one of Shonen Jump's most hilarious characters, is a unique design that instantly stands out thanks to his big bulbous head and his goofy smile. While all his attacks would probably be on the weaker side, the real strength would come in fast combos and doing a Flash-style attack that involves spinning around the world over and over.

Yuma Kuga (World Trigger)

Um... Actually, I don't know about this character. I think he's popular. And he has white hair... Sure, bring him in. I'll learn about him as I play.

Emma (The Promised Neverland)

Another difficult one, but equally as interesting as Senku. And sadly, just as unlikely. Emma is the protagonist of The Promised Neverland, a series that makes me feel smarter just for reading it, and starts off with her seeming rather weak. As it goes however, she acquires guns and other combat weapons she can use in combat. Hey, if a policeman with a McDonald's eyebrow can be playable, why not her?

Tetsuya Kuroko or Shōyō Hinata (Kuroko no Basket or Haikyu!!)

A colourful character in a sports outfit who runs around the battlefield and uses a weak ball to beat up supremely strong aliens or monsters? Yeah, that'd be hilarious! Either one of these will do me just fine! Make it happen!

Lala Satalin Deviluke (To Love-Ru)

Well we need fanservice, don't we? And who better than To Love-Ru's Lala, the poster girl for fanservice! She can use... um... her boobs!

Magical Pâtissière Kosaki (Nisekoi)

Nisekoi deserves a mention too, but I didn't want to go with Chitoge because I'm a bitter boy. Besides, I remembered the Magical Girl spinoff that the writer wrote, and thought it could be a lot funnier. Random magic spells, transforming with conveniently-placed steam and a Ruri-mouse on her shoulder? Pass the whipped cream, please!

Natsu Dragneel (Fairy Tail)

Mortal Kombat had Predator and Alien. Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 had Lars Alexandersson. So I want a crossover too, and I want Natsu Dragneel to be the one! I want to use Dragon Slayer magic, and I want to feel like a monster as I roar so hard that foes are deafened! And most importantly of all, Death Battle proved Natsu is stronger than Ace so he deserved to be in J-Stars more!

Maka Albarn (Soul Eater)

Soul Eater is often forgotten in this day and age, and I hate that so much. Maka, the series' protagonist, is one of my favourite female protagonists in any anime, so a crossover in which she appears is just a perfect idea. I was going to give the place to Sebastian Michaelis from Black Butler, but without Ciel, he'd be pointless. Besides, Maka's scythe is gorgeous! I want it so hard!

Inuyasha (Inuyasha)

Lastly, we have Inuyasha... Actually, I haven't watched this series yet but I wanted one more crossover character and I have a friend who adores this series. So Inuyasha and his big sword get the spot. I don't think any other characters have swords, do they?

Any characters missing? Who do you think would be great to play as? Let me know in the comments!

  1. since this game is trying to have a story mode again but from the sounds of the interview they seem want to stick to the series that remained relevant and have a certain level of popularity such as why Naruto and Sasuke still end up appearing in this game when they're 16 instead of as adults which is sad in a way since that just says in Boruto they are weaker instead of stronger. so hard to say really who'll they pick but ultimately this looks like it'll do as good or a little better than j stars since it doesn't look like they have too much picked out in how to play other than being a more polished Naruto ultimate ninja storm game which isn't gonna last long compared to smash brothers ultimate.

to explain Lala she is a shonen jump heroine originally and her abilities aren't just fanservice since unless you haven't read the manga at all you would be aware she has a high IQ where she made inventions that backfire and work for combo attacks, her all purpose tool also works as a sword, she has super strength near or on par with the levels of midoriya, she has a scream so powerful she blew away a full typhoon to nothing, and finally she has her energy beam attack that is shot from the tip of her tail which is powerful enough to destroy a black hole of sorts in darkness. that is a basic run down of what Lala is capable of if she were in this game.
