Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Chapter 33 Review - Pain

Written by Shiggins

Pregnancy pains.

Apologies for the later review, but work and such got in the way. I was considering waiting until the next chapter came out for another double-review, but I felt like people might want to read about this one more than whatever comes up next, and I figured it was too late to post my review on Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. So here we are.

Agreed. He was even ranked 1st on the "Best FT Characters" article.
To begin our review, we go to Gray about to win his fight with Laxus' trio as he's activated the Demon Slayer magic. In response, Freed activates his own Dark Écriture, transforming into the robot-knight-darkness-thingie, but he's taken out immediately, followed by Evergreen and Bickslow. Still standing, the trio try to use their eye powers, most notably Freed writing the rune for "Pain", but it's too late and he beats them all. Admittedly, I got a smirk out of Bickslow and Evergreen staring into each other's eyes.

Gray slightly redeems himself (read what I mean in the Opinion section) by at least acknowledging the tragedy of the situation they're in.
As Gray shows regret at having to do this to his friends, we return to Natsu and Gajeel's battle, where the fighters are completely exhausted but still going. Sadly, it's clear that Gajeel is on the losing side, but this is when we get a surprise visit from Levy! And she's going full Piccolo-pose to defend Gajeel!

Natsu starts to charge forward, as Gajeel screams for her to move out of the way before she gets hurt, and we get a flashback of Levy telling the Natsu team about her pregnancy, and this causes present day Natsu to stop. Before Natsu can risk any more trouble, Levy uses her Solid Script to create a carriage, and the couple have a touching moment. It's almost as if they are way better than Natsu...

Back in Left Hand City, Erza and Jellal are having their own fight, with Jellal still at the best he's ever been and flirting with her as much as possible. And at Right Hand City, Wendy arrives at the church to see the useless members of Fairy Tail that nobody cares about suspended in cocoons, and this is when a brand new villain comes up!

Opinion: Some... questionable heroes this time.

So Gray... do you want to talk to Juvia about the fact you decided to strip Evergreen for literally no reason? Is your demon power sexist? Because it's very damn creepy that you decided she needed to be down to her undies while the boys get to keep their robes on despite them receiving the same attacks. The battle was quick and predictable enough as is, so we didn't need the fight being worsened by something so distracting. It wasn't even a joke! If it was a joke, it'd at least justify it somewhat.

Does anyone seriously care about these people? If they died, would it negatively affect how you feel about the series?
To be more positive, it's good to see Jellal is still crazy. Both contestants are half-naked in that fight, and they're keeping the humour up. It's a welcome break from what we just saw, and I'm starting to put out a wild theory that Jellal is just pretending to be mind controlled because he's finally had enough of me being mean about him and wants my approval. It would explain why he's acting so differently, when everything else is still the same (with added worship for Touka, I mean).

And now for the Natsu stuff... Yeah, he nearly punched a pregnant woman. That's just uncomfortable to watch. I admit it provided some good drama and tension, but it isn't a good image for our hero to actually run charging to hit dear pregnant Levy. Still though, the page after Natsu buggers off is just lovely, and a sharp reminder of how much better she and Gajeel are as protagonists than the pink-hair. To this day, they're still one of my favourite all-time ships, and I will always pray for Mashima-senpai to give at least an arc of just this couple one day. Long-time readers will remember the tears I shed when Gajeel and Levy working on the Magic Council didn't receive the attention it deserved.

At least we're finally getting a new villain to add to the drama, even if he does look... familiar... to other Mashima characters. And he's fighting Wendy, who is one of the best characters Fairy Tail has to offer, which should make this upcoming fight nice and engaging. She's by far the most underused of the five.

Manga Rating: 1.5/5

Best Part: Gajeel and Levy will always be the best.

Worst Part: Natsu and Gray looked pretty awful by comparison.

...It's the Oracion Seis arc on Nirvana. I can't believe I JUST got that!
