Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Chapters 56 and 57 Review - Reliable Friends and The Power to Live

Written by Shiggins

My break is over!

It's amazing how much a small time away can recharge the batteries and give someone new energy, isn't it? It's even better when the first thing I get to work on is a double review of Fairy Tail, and those chapters bring a smile to my face. Hooray, something to actually enjoy in this world!

Yes she it is.

We return to the situation from 55, where Carla is frozen by botany and Wendy is unable to figure out how to win this, with only a few enchantments left and no Irene to provide a safety net. Doom begins spraying spores to bring down the final blow, but they are destroyed by a sand attack! From... Max?

This is when we see the cavalry, and it's the entire D-Team of Fairy Tail! Max, Warren, Laki, Nab, Kinana, Reedus and Vijeeter are here to take on Doom, and yes this is actually happening. Wendy uses the last of her enchantments to upgrade the group, and they all get a hit out on Doom to weaken him through sheer numbers. With a final attack from Max, who uses the same technique Ajeel once did, Doom is defeated and Carla is saved!

....eww.
And since that chapter was so short, let's move on to 57! Natsu's fight with GS-Aldoron continues, who is able to feel it in the Force that Doom has been taken down and it might be affecting his own abilities as well.Back to Lucy, who fuses her Scorpio dress with her Aquarius dress to create a very badass design that can destroy the biggest tree drone in her way.

Sadly, that's her now finished and we go to Gray and Juvia who are facing off against Metro, the creator of the army, who is surprised when he is unable to kill Juvia because of her Water Magic. Using the logic of an RPG however, Metro absorbs Juvia into his own body! Now, Metro has the power of blue on his side as well, and Gray finds himself overwhelmed due to being unwilling to hurt Juvia.

STOP HURTING JUVIA! Keyes, Meredy, Invel, Vidaldus, Freed... Why does every single fight she's in have to be so painful?!
Gray is struck down, and Metro curiously asks what Juvia is to him. Gray says that Juvia is his reason to live, to keep on fighting and not use Ice Shell for the 18th time, and this causes Metro to feel pain. Why? Well, Juvia went full-steam due to Gray's kind words!

Opinion: Well, I'm having fun.

I bet this will be a divisive opinion to have, but I quite enjoyed these two chapters and the unorthodox routes that the series has taken to defeat these woody threats.

For starters, if you read my last review, then you'll notice that I made several predictions about this situation and that none of them have come true. And I like when something can subvert my expectations without breaking the rules. Wendy being saved by the minor characters, and some of them almost looking cool as they do so? That's not been done before, it's believable, and it gives a nice moment to a severely underused group that often feel like they're kept on to keep the Fairy Tail Guild from having the size of a highschool club.

FUSION! I forgot all about this! Now we need all the fusions! All of them!
The other surprise has come from Juvia, trapped inside Metro and actually being a threat to him from the inside through something that we've actually seen in the past. It's no secret that when Juvia's emotions get the better of her, her body reacts almost aggressively. The angry Juvia during her first battle with Gray creating scolding hot water is a good example, as is the power-up when Juvia fought Meredy. Here, we have a more cartoonish reaction but it's funny and appropriate. And interestingly, the picture of her being trapped inside Metro is somewhat reminscient of her fight with Keyes, making me wonder if this is some way of showing the difference of the outcome thanks to Gray being there. Or maybe it's just a reference to the past, who knows?

Genuinely, I'm hoping the next chapter is Gray having to constantly compliment Juvia to make her boil (amazingly, that is not innuendo) until Metro releases her, before we move on to Jellal squaring off against Gears. And considering we've had two chapters in a row provide some fun resolutions, I'm really hoping we can go 3-for-3 now.

Well... I didn't need to see that.
I'd say the only negatives I really have are that these God Seeds still aren't interesting outside of their designs, and that the fight Natsu is having against GS-Aldoron is easily the least exciting of the bunch that we're dealing with right now. It often feels like we're cutting back to him to remind us he exists, and drop a hint that GS-Aldoron can be defeated easily once the others are taken down.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have my own battles to fight. The remake of Sephiroth won't kill himself, you know!

Manga Rating:

56: 4/5

57: 4/5

Best Part: Unexpected strategies!

Worst Part: Still no personality from the GS'... GSes... them.

Can't think of a funny statement here so... just appreciate the cuteness? It's what I'm doing.
