I think the trope of cliff-hangers and gut-punches from manga over the years has made me too cynical. A character dies, I refuse to believe it's permanent. A villain is a woman in Fairy Tail, I refuse to believe she'll be bad forever no matter what she does. That last one is a new one because I officially raise my hands and scoff at the contrived nonsense of Selene in this review. Oh and there's some Gray stuff too, but that's as tacked on as my mention of him in this paragraph.
If this is true, maybe my Yuri theory will finally be given the validation it deserves. |
It's hard not to be excited when alchemy is mentioned in a manga, thanks to Fullmetal Alchemist being the one of the all-time best manga ever without question, but the unfortunate feeling that I can't shake is that it came out of nowhere for no reason except to give Gray a purpose for being in this arc. I think I mentioned it in a previous review but Gajeel and Gray have both been very unnecessary to the plot for quite a while now, so this new enemy really is just a random guy to give Gray a fight.
You'll always be good enough for me, Juvia. |
The fight itself is fine, serviceable but not without its flaws. For example, I always love to see Juvia show up but without it being her personality, it's a lacklustre showing. And the revelation that Gray sees himself as the weakest member is something you would expect to be a big part of his character but here it's shown, gone and on to the next situation with barely a fart. Which is a shame because I honestly find Gray the most boring of the main group in Fairy Tail, so I'd take what I could get if offered to me.
The reveal at the end of these chapters, that God Serena is alive and before Gajeel, is something I should feel excited about but I absolutely doubt is true. I loved God Serena, and I hated how little he and the rest of the Wizard Saints were utilised despite their build-up and designs, so the idea he's back is a welcome one... but no, it's going to be an alchemist using his form for a power-up. Without a doubt. If it really is God Serena, and he is going to be a relevant part of 100 Year Quest moving forward, then yes I'll be happy next review, but it's much more likely you'll be reading the words "I told you so".
Sorry Juvia. If this was possible, I'd have become Lio Fotia long ago. |
As for the reveal of Selene's "true" motivation, I don't even know if I have the strength to give it the complaining it deserves, guys. It's bullshit regardless though. This is a character who has murdered humans, attempted to murder humans, tortured several of our protagonists during a celebratory party, and more. Now we're being told she wants to live in peace and hates the other Dragon Gods and I hate it. I'm so tired of this nonsense repeating itself. Irene, Touka, Minerva, Flare. What, are we going to bring back Kyoka and Seilah to make them good too next? It's shiiiiit.
In conclusion, a bunch of "what?" followed by some "huh?" and a "yawn". Honestly, I'm just walking away from this review realising how much this series has wasted it's amazing cast of supporting characters. I didn't realise how much I missed Juvia until today.
