Fairy Tail 100 Year Quest Chapters 39 and 40 Review - Cocoon Dragon Coocoo and Thicker than Blood

Written by Shiggins

Ghost and a shell.

After such a strong start to a character, I was really looking forward to a fitting finale. Sadly, get ready for some negativity in this review... but on the plus side, it's not all bad! And even more positively, it looks like we're going to be getting these chapters more frequently! Seriously, Mashima-senpai. Your work attitude is very impressive.

A very appropriate reaction.
It's Wendy time, as she is now ready to fight the creeper known as Nebal, despite being stuck in the cocoon. After some cute teasing, (Nebal's words creating the chapter's title), the fight starts! It's brief, but very silly and adorable, and is unfortunately brought to a swift end when Nebal shatters the orb he was sent to destroy, weakening the Wood Dragon Aldoron.

Oh god... Either I've been far too lonely lately or even Nebal can be cute at times now. (And no, don't tell me the truth!)
We get yet another glance of Laxus and Kiria in their area, both agreeing that they have the same task, albeit for different goals, and the only reason they're fighting is literally because Kiria is a bloodlusting psychopath. I love her. And speaking of love, Jellal is officially going to be named as Better-Jellal (BJ) from now until he returns to normal.

BJ has captured Erza and bound her, but she manages to trick him into freeing her and tying him up. Does he complain? No, he's loving it! Sadly, Erza leaves him behind as she runs away before she's embarrassed any further by the situation, and we return to Natsu fighting Wraith.

I am very much looking forward to the post-arc conversation these two are going to have.
Wraith is able to use his own powers to hurt Natsu through convenient blah-blahs and starts using the body of Makarov to bring the pain. As Natsu takes punishment, and even he's calling this unfair logic, Wraith suddenly realises he's fully synchronised with Makarov. Are they... related?!

In our next chapter, Natsu and Wraith-Makarov resume their fight, and Natsu is forced to go all-out with his Demolition Fist to send the old man crashing down. As he does, Wraith enters Makarov's memories... through magic, I guess. Makarov is young, not yet the Guildmaster, and he's in conversation with several future GMs, including Blue Pegasus' Bob, and also the overly-complicated name of Porlyusica, who he is shipped with.

The casual scene is interrupted when someone in their guild is rushed in, about to die, and we see it's Wraith. Gasp. Wraith was a member of Fairy Tail, and he died right in Makarov's arms, who called out that they were family as he died. In the present, the ghost of Wraith is passing on now that he is no longer needing to find who killed him, Makarov says goodbye to him, and Natsu returns to his body. Even he's bloody confused.

Opinion: And it started so well too...

I really did like Wraith when he first appeared. A scary ghost with emo eyes, who couldn't be hurt but could hurt others no problem. However, I've been getting the nagging sensation in my head that Wraith was created and brought into the story before anyone knew how to defeat him. Which might explain why this "shocking" development came out of nowhere and was so easily able to wrap everything up in a tight little bow. And let's not pretend it's anything but convenient that the first body Wraith found just happened to be the one he knew when he died. It's almost like Fairy Tail has been involved every single event in this planet's history! Natsu was lucky Wraith wasn't a member of Blue Pegasus or Quatro Cerberus, wasn't he? And so, another character has been dealt a bad hand, and he literally fades away to one day appear as a ghost in Natsu's whatever-heaven I guess.

Theory: The orbs are actually a seal. When they're gone, Aldoron will shrink down to his human form.
Thank God the other stuff is still so much fun. You can count on Wendy to be cute, Kiria to be crazy, BJ is still entertaining, and Erza is now on her way to get back into the action. Sadly, it might be the last we see of BJ but at least he went down grinning. I'm definetly going to enjoy re-reading this arc again in the long run.

I wonder what Levy and Gajeel are up to...

Manga Rating:

39: 4/5

40: 1.5/5

Best Part: Tied-up BJ.

Worst Part: A magical convenience.

When was the last time the other two were even relevant?
